Well I'd be happy to join. Maybe trying to get this up as an approved entry would bring it to more people's attention. I stumbled upon it by chance looking for information about vegetarianism in Mexico.

Yea, we got a live one! Heh, when I keep saying "we" when it's really just me, I start sounding like Gollum from Lord of the Rings. Anyway, I guess my expectations were too high for speed of membership. I had left info about this in the vegetarianism thread, and I hoped a lot of the vegetarians who had responded to that thread would see it. But that thread was mostly inactive for months, so those guys probably don't even read the ocassional new post there. I'm waiting for my friend Kate to emerge from the void and join. She's been awfully busy with her new job so she hasn't gotten around to it. I'm going to present this to Peta for Peta's Picks, but I was kind of hoping I'd get a few members first. It's only been about 2 weeks, so I'll wait a little longer first.

But where are my are my manners? Welcome to the H2G2 Vegetarian Society, jasegroom, and congratulations on being the first member! With any luck, this thing will take off eventually, because I have seen dozens of dedicated vegetarians on h2g2, and I don't see why they wouldn't want to join, as there's no obligation to do anything. I envision the HVS as being a kind of sanctuary for h2g2 vegetarians, a place to hang out with like-minded people, relax and look at the links, and discuss their issues with people who have been through the same things. I guess a more consice way of putting it is to just use that magic word, "community". Like all communities, if this suceeds, there will be those who are deeply involved and spend a lot of time here, and there will be others that are less involved but stop by every now and then to see what's going on.

So anyways, I'll add your name to the previously nonexistant list as soon as I get the chance, and as for the user pages I mentioned in the intro, well, I'm still working out exactly what that's going to be like, so I'll let you know. Oh, and I lied about the Crap-O-Matic. But I'm sure you already knew that. So thanks for joining, and I'll keep you updated as to any further developments. And sorry about this novel of a post here--I do tend to ramble on a bit.

Ok, you're all linked up as an official member. All I ask in return is that you consider possibly linking to the Society on your home page. Right now, we need all the promotion we can get. I have no right to demand it, but it would really be a big help. Once again, thank you for joining, and welcome to the H2G2 Vegetarian Society!

I've put a link in from my homepage. If you're looking for links to veggie websites, I'd recommend http://www.vegsoc.org/ . This is the web page of the vegetarian society in England, which I belive is the oldest vegetarian organisation in the world. It's got some good tips on nutrition, recipes and so on, and some pretty good links.

Thanks! I'll check that link out in a minute, sounds good. And thanks for the link too. I know I wrote that I would give recognition to those people, but it already looks silly to say Members to date: and have only one, so if it's ok with you, I'll wait until we have a few more members before I make that thank you list. I emailed Peta and she said she'll put it in her Picks! So hopefully we will get a lot of people in the next week or so. (Knock on wood)

I visited your h2g2 homepage and that trip around the world really sounds interesting. I live in the US (Ohio) and I am looking forward to touring Europe someday. I might even get to study history in Italy while I'm in college! Anyway, I know this must seem like kind of a joke at this point, but everything has to start somewhere, so hopefully this will be more than a joke in the not-so-distant future. Once again thanks for everything!

That's odd. The vegsoc link didn't work. smiley - sadface I tried .com and .co.uk as well. Nothing. Maybe the server's down. I'll try it again tomorrow.

I checked the link before I posted it and it worked OK. Maybe it was the server, but I've never had problems with it before. Try these two. They're the international vegetarian union and the european branch of it respectively. http://ivu.org/ , http://ivu.org/evu/ . I'll have a look around on the ivu site and see if there's an American branch as well.

The IVS one works fine, and I'll add that when I get a chance, but the first one still doesn't work for me.

Very strange - don't know if it's because it's a UK organisation, but I've never encountered web pages that are limited to one country.

I just tried it from a different computer, and it works. I don't know if it was just down or if it doesn't work with my home computer for some reason, but it appears to be fully functional. I'll add it to the list.

I've put a link to the veggie page in a comment I made on one of today's approved entries (about hommous). That might generate a bit of traffic. Are you going to put a discussion thread in Peta's Picks at some point?

Thanks. I hadn't realized the proper way to submit a "pick" suggestion, and I emailed her instead. She said she'll use it, but I guess we have to wait until the older ones get their time in. Do you think I should leave a message in the thread anyway?

Hello, can I join? It's high time I took an interest. Non-leather bike gear is my particular hang-up. Well the lack of gloves mainly. I shall put a link on my page when I work out how to do it (I haven't taken an interest in my page until recently).

Yeah, it's an open thread, so just wing an entry on in there and see who bites. Looks like we've got a couple already.

Not really a vegetarian, but considering it? Hmm, what the heck, we need everyone we can get. Maybe I should change the policy to allow everyone who believes in vegetarianism, regardless of whether they are actively vegetarian. I actually had this conversation with someone, and I didn't think it would come up, but it did so I need to adapt. The only dillema is that while I personally am a vegetarian for moral reasons, the HVS is not intended as a protest group, as to not be a divisive force on h2g2. But I guess I can let non-vegs in.

OK, you're both in! Congratulations, and welcome to the H2G2 Vegetarian Society. I may take a while to add your names to the list though, because my home computer isn't working, and I have to leave this one now. Sorry about that. Thanks for joining

Thanks, Zarquon.

I recently started at college, made some new friends. Some of 'em are vegetarian. Which is what got me to thinking.

Currently I'm of the opinion that - morally acceptible or not - there just isn't any *point* in eating meat. I mean... maybe the animals suffer and maybe they don't. Hard to say. But avoiding meat altogether isn't going to hurt me, so why not err on the side of caution?

I haven't had meat at lunchtime for months, but at home 'tisn't me who does the cooking and I'm very reluctant to cause trouble by asking for a different diet... I live in a big family, and my Mum doesn't need any extra work. And she isn't going to be buying less meat if I decide not to eat it...

So I reckon I'll have t' wait until I prepare my own food before I can become strictly vegetarian.

My heart, as they say, is in the right place. I hope.
