Since you're on the subject of Stephen Fry, I'd like to ask: which
of his movies do you recommend? I've only seen him in a television
series about Jeeves and Bertie Wooster. I've read about Fry's
books, but haven't read the books themselves.....

(I discovered this thread today, and was puzzled about the first 140
posts, which were either in German or moderated into oblivion.
There were some posts about the film "2001," but I couldn't
understand the German. If they'd been in French, I could have
figured them out smiley - smiley .)

Hi, Kasia.

Thanks for explaining.

I thought that there were computer programs
that could do quick translations. It surprises
me that the BBC has not been able to move in
this direction (Unless they are working on that now,
and haven't had time to put them in place smiley - smiley ).
Ideally, both English and German versions of each
post would appear.

Anyway, good luck. Auf wiedersehn. Guten abend.

Or 'Tsum Wohl' which would be written as 'Zum Wohl' but please pronounce the Z like ts. Sounds weird if somebody says 'ssssum Wohl' smiley - smiley

There is (was?) a restaurant in Cambridge (Mass.)
called "Zumzum," so I can imagine how it got
that name.

"maybe it is running by Germans? "

Probably. I haven't been there in a while,
so I don't know if it is still there.
Knockwurst and other German foods are on
the menu. On a hot day like this, I would
skip the knockwurst and head straight for the
ice cream!

(I had frankfurters for lunch--another
German food, I think. smiley - smiley )

What the *** is knockwurst? Means nothing to me. Bockwurst, yes.

A friend just told me the other day about her trip to America, and mentioned that they have type of beer called "Schwarzwaldmädel", which depicts a girl in Bavarian costume on it. the English are no better. You know the English word for German white wine is "Hock", which, I read somewhere, comes from "Hockenheim". As far as I know, no wine is grown in Hockenheim. You just get noisy cars there. (I live about 35 km from there)

or perhaps 'Knackwurst' was meant?

Hi, Bossel.

I just learned something: the spelling changes when you translate "knackwurst"
from German into English.I found a website with a recipe for:

"Schweinskoteletten mit Knackwurst und Kartoffeln"

which was translated as:

"Pork Chops with Knockwurst and Potatoes"

I never realized the spelling changes!
