In the Netherlands it is today St. Maarten, after the man who cut his coat in half to give it to a freezing beggar.
The small children go along the houses carrying lights to sing their St Maarten songs and receive some candy.
But alas, there need to be as many grownups to keep them from being robbed by larger children

Now that's the only bit of politicking I ever did. When my kids were little I wrote to the paper to complain about the big kids pushing in. They get "Weckmännl" here, which are like gingerbread men, but just a plain sweet bun yeast dough.
So I wrote to the paper that the big kids would push and shove and stuff these Weckmännl up their jackets and show off with how many they had got (they probably never ate them) and the little kids got pushed and trampled on and often didn't get their share because they were all gone.
I suggested that they hand them out to the children while they were standing round the fire, rather than the kids come up to collect them. The PTB actually did that and it worked!
That was my little sortie into politics and Letters to the Editor!
Oh, and what Bossel was getting at was that 11.11 is also the start of the Helau season.
So put your funny hats on everyone.

I'm not in the mood for it either. It used to be good fun, but now it's all so forced. I just don't come from the right part of the world.
It's just an excuse to get drunk. Who needs an excuse to get drunk?
