A question of terminology

OK..I was talking about bisexuality with a friend and we decided that we're not exactly sure what the term means. Personally, I think it means, for me anyway, the willingness to have a relationship of some kind with a person of either sex. But what about people who keeps it at a casual, or sexual level, like say a person who likes to have relations with either gender, but shows a strong preference for only one sex for life-partnering? I came up with some silly possibilities for names (biventurer, bita tester), but i'm wondering if there's some industry standard name for this sort of thing? smiley - smiley And I hate the term 'bicurious' so hopefully that's not it smiley - tongueout

I hate the term bicurious too - to my mind it's a state that doesn't exist!

As far as I know bisexual means attracted to both sexes.

I haven't heard any industry terms for the phenomena you described...

I can't remember who it was, but there was someone who described bisexuality as a 'graduated' thing, where it was on a five (or something like that) scale, I don't think there are a a lot of black and whites when it comes to bisexuality, some are more towards those of their own sex, others tend more towards those of the other... I guess...

I think you mean the Kinsey scale. 1 is exclusively heterosexual, 6 is exclusively homo, 2, 3, 4 or 5 would be bi but with leanings to one gender or the other. That would cover things like 'bicurious' and 'heteroflexible' horrible words both. Kinsey, a notable (notorious smiley - winkeye) sexologist was also one of the first to come up with the one in ten figure.

N - a kinsey 6

I have a great book at home - 'the big book of filth' - which is a dictionary of sex slang. I'll look up slang for bisexual and see if we can find a more pleasing euphemism. smiley - biggrin

The sexologists are sadly lacking in the edited guide. If I had the time I'd write something about them. They represent a fascinating time in the history of the study of sex.

You can relate to that one, eh, Blicky? smiley - winkeye

Speaking of childhood, I really wish some alternative lifestyle positive kids shows/movies would be made. I keep having to emphasize the choice the kids have in partner selection, that they can have crushes on whomever, etc. This is one case where I'd be grateful for the entertainment industry to do some communicating to my kids, since their rl world is not so options friendly (or demonstrative anyway..perhaps it will be better in the UK than Idaho? I hope?).

Its more easy going over here many of the kids tv presenters are openly gay even if they dont shout about it. One of the things that annoys me about kids TV dramas is the high number of relationships that these impossibly beautiful collections of teenagers get into.

Even though I think there should be less or atlest a more realistic representation of "that sort of thing" I do agree there is a case for representing a broader collection of orientations.

Having said that there are gay and omnisexual sharacters in a lot of the soaps over here, but they're soaps and Id rather BBQ my own genitals than encourage kids to watch theat cr@p.

My thing is, I'd like for them not have to deprogram themselves if their heads (or whatevers) lead them in a direction that isn't 'standard procedure.' But then, I'm that idealist who'd love to little boys get to play kiss tag without getting beat up. smiley - shrug
