A Conversation for GLAUCOMA 2 - The Pathia Strikes Back
How offensive...

I think the title of this pub crawl is very offensive to people with the condition and if they could see clearly enough to read it I am sure they would complain...

I think you'll find that those with a disability and have lived with a disability long term tend to use same as a way of making light of their conditions. As well as heart disease, eyesight issues are hereditary in my family. My youngest brother is registered blind but still takes the 'mickey' out of himself as I do with my heart probs.
Classic type conversation with youngest is when we've explained something to him he says, 'oh, I see', to which we reply, 'really, since when'?
It's a form of 'relief' (or should that be release??)I suppose, you can't beat the condition, so make the most and at least try to have a laugh about it, serious though it is.

"I think you'll find that those with a disability and have lived with a disability long term tend to use same as a way of making light of their conditions."
Oh yes, when I brought my new boyfriend (and future husband) round to meet my grandparents, the conversation went something like this:
Grandad: Have I seen this one before?
Me: No, not this one.
Grandad: Well, I won't now, will I?

My grandmother had the condition...it brought tears to our eyes when, after her operation to remove them, she walked into her lounge and said she never knew the wallpaper had a pattern on it. Happy .
Just because I made a joke about a condition doesn't mean I make light of the condition or am laughing at the people who suffer with the condition.

The SRG has a tradition of making up an acronym for their meets. I also refer you to your own statement above, which also makes me wonder why you got offended in the first place?

I wasn't offended.
I was partly being satirical. I was merely aping the way in which people jump to the 'defence' of others when they have seen/read something that *might* be 'offensive' to the target of the comment and then go on to whine and moan at 'how disgusting something is'.
i.e. the dwarf-throwing contests that were going on many years ago and got forced out of business because of pc do-gooders saying how terrible, and demeaning and offensive the spectacle was to the dwarfs involved and dwarfs in general.
The only offense caused was putting the dwarfs out of a job who were being thrown. They had no problem with being involved and were getting a nice wage out of it.
And of course the even more absurd stopping of the 'dead Fish Contest' in Lyme Regis.

Most of the 'how offensive' complaints come from people who will never even have met anyone from the 'minority' group in question.

So am I allowed to use the smiley or is that offensive to people with no eyes?
I think in future all my posts will come with the following disclaimer:
"This post may contain material which some people may find offensive. However, I find some people offensive, so that's just tough tits."

Anyway, if you think GLAUCOMA is offensive, you should have been at the London meet that was arranged at very short notice to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first Hitchhiker's Guide radio broadcast...
...or the Completely UNplanned Twenty Fifth Anniversary Collective Extravaganza.
Work it out quickly before it gets yikesed.

I don't know people try and be inventive and come up with new names from the most requently meeting researcher group here and someone who's Grandmother had the condition finds it offensive.
To balance things up I would like to declare that my Grandmother also had Glaucoma and I have every intention of attending the GLAUCOMA meet and do not find the name chosen offensive as I'm sure at some point during the meet before too much alcohol is embibed there is bound to be some sort of discussion as to the alternative meanings of the meets name.
