A Conversation for The Overwhelmingly Huge Guide to H2G2 Clubs

I agree with Bluebottle, it should be a club. Afterall, there are members, in the form of the people who contribute the jokes. It's exactly the same format as "The H2G2 Historical Society". There, if you've written an Historical article, it becomes part of the society. Here, if you write a joke article, it becomes part of the directory. It's the same, the only differences are different names and the articles cover a different topic. Seems to me that you should either include "So Long" as a club, or remove the Historical society.
As for it being a place where people can hang out and share their newest jokes, that has happened, just not to a great extent. It can only become a place where people hang out if it is advertised as a place where people hang out. It won't be a club unless people like you let it be a club. It seems you're saying that it can't be because you won't let it be when you know that if you let it be it will be.
So I must say I think that I definately think that "So Long And Thanks For Laughing" is a club, and it is unfair of you to think otherwise.

Blatherskite the Mugwump - Bandwidth Bandit Posted Apr 10, 2000
The Historical Society is a club not because of the link library Mustapha has amassed, but because of the discussions that take place there, many generated by Mustapha himself. There are new external links to discuss, and he also suggests his own discussion/debate topics. It is therefore a social forum for anyone with an interest in the subject of history, and there are many, including myself. The society links to any pertinent articles, but the membership of the society (although it is a rare club in that there is no roll) is made up of those who participate in the discussions and comb the site for new articles to catalogue.
By your loose definition, everything in H2G2 could be considered a club, because everything has generated some discussion, and more advertising could lead people to hang out in all sorts of places. There is a discussion that has branched off of one of my articles that began shortly after I wrote it over 3 months ago, and it is still going, but that doesn't make it a club. Bluebottle's collection of jokes is a similar project to the one I made of Urban Legends, and it generated quite a bit of discussion again, but it was not an Urban Legends Club. It was just a collaborative article, and everyone who helped out is now richly rewarded by the fame and prestige of having researcher credit to the Approved Guide Entry.
I'm not trying to disparage Bluebottle's project, and in fact, as I alluded to before, I even attempted to help it along some time ago by writing up an advertisement in a weekly column I used to do for the Post. But I don't see that it fits my definition of a "club." As I see it, the primary goal of these clubs is conversation about their chosen topics, where "So Long..." has a primary goal of collecting. You may also notice that MikeA originally requested the addition of his pages for picking favorite drummers and other musicians, and it is not listed here. The reason for that is that it is mainly an opinion poll, and does not actually encourage discussion on its subject matter. Some researchers may have noticed that Mike is something of a hothead, but I haven't noticed him complaining.
In closing, I would like to point out that this project is something that I conceived on my own, and spent my own time working on, for the benefit of the community. I'm trying to do something beneficial and altruistic, and I don't appreciate being put on the defensive for it. Constructive criticism is welcome, but please don't yell at me for the way I run things.

One other thing... at the moment, you are grossly overestimating the impact this piece has on the community, since it is not well known at this point. I intend to remedy that in the future, but for the present, any additional traffic to these clubs as a direct result of this page has been minimal at best.

I don't know if it rates as a club, more a group probably but the SETI@home h2g2 page might be worth a mention http://www.h2g2.com/A193231

One question:
What do you mean by "stuff"? We all know what you mean by societies - the clubs etc. things, but what are "stuff"?
As for the Joke thing, that's fine. As for you Venus, as you seem so obsessed with the directory, if you'd like to start discussions on jokes and make it into a club, that's fine by me. I was just wondering if it counted, and as Gargleblaster has given good reasons as to why it wasn't, then all's well.

Bruce: probably not, but only because nobody seems to be talking much there.
Bluebottle: 'twere not I who named this forum... so I have no idea what sort of stuff you might be thinking of.
Dan: Will add. Would this one be better placed in the general category, or is it an imaginary realm?

GB, thanks for adding the Misfits. I added a link to your guide on my homepage, and I'll advertise it in the next Misfit Newsletter. Good luck with future traffic

Alright, everyone. All the submissions for which I have recieved the appropriate information are done, and it seems the traffic flow has stopped. It is therefore time to move on to Stage 2. This thing isn't going to be a useful tool for the community unless the community has places to access it. I'm giving away the link to any new researchers I meet in the course of my ACEing, but I am only one person. If you would like to see this resource added to the ACE homepage for new users, and/or to the bottom of the H2G2 homepage, then please stop by this forum and let Peta know: http://www.h2g2.com/forumframe.cgi?forum=24942&thread=40525 The more accessible the link is, the more researchers will be drawn to your clubs.

This thing is always open for submissions... however, I need you to write an ad. Just post it right in here, and I'll add it to the page.

Tired of Ordianary H2G2 Facts? Feeling like something.... Fictitious? Then H2G2 Fiction is for YOU! Read what other researchers have posted, maybe post that old story you wrote in 10th grade and were secretly proud of, or write a synopsis of your new novel. Dammit, if it's not true, H2G2 Fiction wants it. "H2G2 Fiction - It Won't Rot Your Teeth like Ordainary Fiction!"

Goodness, I only just found out about this page. Here's my entry for your club guide:
Me: Nick O'Teen, Grand Weevil-Meister
Organisation: Church of the True Weevil
What it is:
Forget your woes! Do something pointless instead by helping create a deranged and delusional fiction! Lose yourself in the Church of the True Weevil. It's fun! It's nonsense! It's a party! It may seem demented at first but, once you succumb, in no time at all you'll be thinking up variations of popular phrases that involve the word 'weevil', and talking to your H2G2 friends in such a way as to cause them to back away slowly.

You haven't given me much to work with in the way of advertisements, unless you want these combined into a single one. May I have God's user page number?

Aren't you going to add the Church of the True Weevil to your Clubs Guide page?
On A Mission From God...
GOD Posted May 9, 2000
Sorry, I should have known not to send a madman as MY messenger.
Firstly, The H2G2 Guardian Angels are a band of semi-pious souls , who see it as their mission to help out new-users logged on H2G2. They seek to answer any questions that might arise out of the intrigues of H2G2, offer advice on constructing homepages and general advice across the wide vista of human endeavour (...although, they might be a little sketchy on the last one )
Who knows, you might even end up with your OWN Guardian Angel !!!
So why not pop on over, and well send out the welcoming party...
http://www.h2g2.com/A300943
Secondly, The H2G2 Comedy Workshop is designed to be a one-stop-shop for the aspirant comedy writer. It is hoped that it might inspire a degree of collaboration between potential comedic writers. Hopefully, a comprehensive list of pertinent links will be developed to aid in their endeavours, and links to items people want to have critiqued. So whether your serious or just a dabbler, why not stop on by and throw a few punchlines about...
http://www.h2g2.com/A307441
Now, Mad Gerald (U120324) would like me to pass on the following :-
Heaven Sent - The H2G2 Dating Agency.
Feeling Lonely, Feeling Lost, Feeling Like No-One Cares...What the hell, that’s why your on-line...
Why not stop by Heaven Sent, the H2G2 Dating Agency, where someone semi-special is waiting just for you!!! Our inadequately trained staff are guaranteed to match you up with someone who has just as many annoying habits as yourself...
Why not volunteer to be our Hunk/Babe of the Week!!!
Or simply enjoy the sumptuous surrounds of the Main Lounge Area, or venture in to our discreet private rooms where you can get down to some serious er...wordplay’.
Hopefully, you will meet that special someone and you will be able to go on virtual dates around the sites of H2G2, in the process making everyone else livid...
So if your after a ‘shagadelic’ time, or ehem... ‘something for the weekend’, why not drop on by where the ‘swingers’ er...swing.

Thankyou.

Nick: sorry about the delay. This forum was a victim of forum overload on my page, as your entry was pushed off my homepage by other active threads, and I didn't see it until the Mad dude brought it back up. I'll tend to your request shortly.
