A Conversation for Talking Point: Cars

giving names typical American?

Post 1

Alfredo

When I was married with an Amrican woman she always gave a name to the cars we used.
My daughters do the same.

Well,am Dutch and I don't.

Is giving names to your own car typical American?

P.S. I hope we don't copy this behaviour in The netherlands.

Greetings from Amsterdam

Emee, out from under the rock

I read somewhere that it's more typical of women in general to name their cars. Something to do with a woman's basic need to form relationships. Naming a car makes it easier to form an attachment to it and deal with it on a daily basis. So far I've had Bertha, Gertrude, Nikki and Juno.

Maybe there are driving many "Alfredo's" around the world.
I hope they are in good shape !

I am an American, and I only know two people who name their cars. One is a man and one is a woman (neither is me).

Cheerful Dragon

Hubby never named his cars - until he met me. Since then he's had Tigger, Monty, Parker and Thunderbird 2 (T2 for short). My cars have been Leo, Felicity and Lo'tar (a word from Stargate meaning high-ranking slave - 'cos hubby called me a 'slave-driver'smiley - groan).

Not all of our cars get named. My first car didn't have a name as I couldn't come up with one that suited it, and hubby has had a few that didn't get names, probably because he didn't like them enough to give names to them.
