Talking Point - What Makes You Laugh?

Laurel and Hardy - comedy greats?

Laughter is often said to be the best medicine, and if you are feeling a little down in the dumps, an afternoon spent curled up on the sofa watching a DVD of your favourite comedy can work wonders. However, we don't all laugh at the same things and what might have one person bent double in hysterics might leave another punter cold. So, this week, we ask:

  • Who are your comedy greats and why?

  • What's the funniest joke in the world?

  • Is comedy a generational thing? Is what's hilarious to a 15-year-old totally incomprehensible to a 50-year-old?

  • Does comedy cross cultural boundaries? Do different parts of the world laugh at different things? Or are some things just universally funny, such as slapstick comedy and toilet jokes?

  • Do you believe there was a golden age of comedy? Are we living in it now?

  • Are there things which you found hilarious a few years ago, yet when you go back to watch them, you wonder what you found so amusing? Are you getting older, you miserable git?

  • Which new acts do you think will stand the test of time?

  • Is comedy increasingly the most effective way in which we can challenge the politcal status quo?
