I got to just after Frodo met Tom Bombadil, and then gave up because I was so 
bored. Does it get better after that?

Read the rest - it gets so much more interesting - I have found quite a few books with boring beginnings but if you just trawl through it and trust the writer - you will not be disappointed. It gets into your brain and stays there; and you are never quite the same again.
