'I know nothing of the geography and even less about the US'. So why choose it, GB smiley - erm (Just curious smiley - smiley

You say nothing about the origin of the name. This is what a website says about it:

'Authorities differ on the source of the name of St. Helens. Some believe Knighton named the settlement for the mountain plainly visible across the river, others insist the Knighton family came from St. Helens, England, and named it for their old home town'.

I'm interested 'coz I wrote an Entry about St Helena of Constantine at A11953280, and St Helens, Lancs is named after her. Perhaps you could insinuate a link? smiley - grovel

smiley - erm GB. Are you sure you've submitted the right version here? It appears to be exactly the same entry as the version that was in PR last time, including all the spelling errors and faults mentioned in the original PR thread, eg first person references.

Yes, I'm about to go through it for spelling and faults. I just thought it would be easier to submit and have the assistance of PR reviewers as I don't know American spelling names whether they should be changed to British English.

Big Al, h2g2 is desperately short of entries to publish on the FP. Going through the Flea Market is just an idea to stock up Peer Review.

I'm wondering whether to change the title to "Schooling in Saint Helens" or "Educational Facilities in Saint Helens"

I've tidied up what I can and gone through the old PR thread...I'd add a bunch of links but won't bother unless this is moving forward.smiley - erm

This is missing some of the things that other town entries have, but I think as it is it's suitable for the Guide.

No point hanging around in the hope some other inhabitant will spot it where it is and add the info. At least Edited it might be founf via a search engine.

Gnomon - time to move on

Yes, mountains can erupt. Once they do so, they are volcanoes, but they are also still mountains.

Hiya GB!

Nice of you to try to salvage this entry. Good luck with it. smiley - ok

One thing I noticed that seemed incomplete was the "places to visit" section. smiley - erm

Most people can figure out what a park, high school, museum, courthouse, and theatre are, but what is "Saint Helens on the Riverfront"? Gift Shop? Restaurant? Coffee Shoppe? House of ill repute? smiley - biggrin

Ah, so that's how they refer to the actual riverfront?

Makes sense, and thanks!

Well, I haven't personally been to this town, but perhaps I can help with the american language bit at least.

>>The public library is near the Louis and Clark school<<
smiley - yikes it's *Lewis* and Clark. Every town in the Northwestern US, without exception, has something named after them.

>>The next is Louis and Clark school, named after the explorers of western United States<<
There it is again. Egregious. (plus they were explorers of the Northwestern US, not the Western US). I'm not even sure what to compare this to - perhaps spelling Sir Edmund's name 'Hillery'. Merriwether Lewis and William Clark are absolute legends here. Giants. They were sent by Pres Jefferson to find a northwest passage from the Mississippi to the Pacific Coast and were the first of european descent to explore this new and vast area of the US. The scope of the endeavor was akin to exploring the moon.

I'll just take a few deep breaths now, shall I?

smiley - puff

Ok, that's better.

>>The people in Saint Helens are decent enough to give you directions to places around town if you ask. The rain and cold usually keeps everyone in a grumpy and/or melancholy humour.<<
It's rainy and cold in the winter - not the summer. I'd suggest some rearrangement.

->In spite some inevitable grumpiness and melancholy brought on by prolonged seasons of rain and cold, the people in Saint Helens are still decent enough to give you correct directions to places around town if you ask.<-

>>The down-town area (AKA Old Town) itself is very old, <<
It is worth a footnote that, in the US, 'old' is 50 to 100 years, and 'very old' is over 150 years.

As I re-read it, this entry has a lot of potential and you've got it in decent shape, but It's still a little bit smiley - erm in places. Would you like help with some major-ish renovations?

In fact, come to think of it, Lois & Clark could make for an unnecessary footnote as well as a gratuitous link.

Hmmm... we'll see what GB thinks.
