Entry: UPDATE - York, UK - A25068657
Author: Elentari is talking like a pirate.Yarr. What you be lookin' at? - U202814
Hi everyone. For those of you who don't know, the update process is changing. New updates are going through PR for a week or more for the usual PR checks and comments, then being updated directly when they seem ready.
Because this process is still in development (this is only the second entry, to my knowledge, to use it) the entry was in Update Forum for a while. Here is the appropriate thread: F149889?thread=4487489

As ever, much better. I can't comment on the content, not knowing much about York, but the structure etc. looks okay.

>>The Railway Museum near the train station has a good reputation among those who like that sort of thing,
-
>>This seems to reach the hight of silliness (Guy Fawkes was baptised there) and the Minster is Church of England.
- the hight? British spelling? Or not?
I don't either know much about York, but there's an interesting side story related to Clifford's Tower - the York Massacre of 1190 - if you want to add more historical details. The bodies from the massacre were recently unearthed to make way for a shopping mall, and some sort of memorial was put up. (There's a fairly thorough if indignant story here, though you have to sign in to read it.

I spotted a few things:
"The section near the Minster is particularly good for views of the building." appears twice in the paragraph on the Minster. You might want two paragraphs their actually, one for the minster and one for the walls.
Weren't 'shamels' the butcher's hooks, not the shelves? I could well be mistaken here.
"a fudge shop that gives free samples" If you mean the Fudge Kitchen, it's on Low Petergate; there is a shop on the Shambles that sells fudge but I don't think it gives samples.
The church next to the Minster is St Michael-le-Belfry, known affectionately as St Mikes. It's not Catholic. Guy Fawkes was baptised an Anglican but later converted to Catholicism. In other words, there's two C of E churches next door to each other. Very silly.
I like this entry. You've captured the air York has of not quite taking itself seriously.

Thanks.
Leo, I'll have a look at the link later, thanks for digging it up.
And no, that was me making a silly typo.

Ref Jorvik Viking Centre and the 'authentic smells' ('Footnote- 'read 'replulsive') when I visited some years ago now, I personally thought the smells were rsather dilute.
I also remember the report in New Scientist magazine when the Centre first opened. It said something like (paraphrase), 'There is also a Viking sitting on the toilet behind a brushwood screed. The designers couldn't quite brin themselves to providing the authentic smell here and all I could detect was the modern day smell of bleach!
Ref ghosts, I don't know the trutrh of this but many years ago I read of a woman who had seen the ghosts of an entire Roman mounted legion marching through, what was then, the bar of a pub. Because the ground level had raised in that time she could only see them from their knees upward.
However, what was unusual was that many members of the legion were coloured and their clothing in many instances was very ragged and their weaponry etc was non-uniform. Apparently archaeologists were very interested in this and took detailed statements from her because, at that time, the fact that the Roman army contained conscripts and mercenaries was only just comintg to bve recognised, and this information wasn't yet in the public domain.
I would love to know the truth of this as it would go a considerable way to enabling me to believe in ghosts.

I've heard that story about the ghosts too, I think it's one of the ones often told on ghost walks.
I'll change "repulsive" to "unpleasant".
