A Conversation for Oliver Cromwell

Cromwell Father of Modern Britian?

Cromwell's reign help set up the following Modern British Institutions and structures.
The Royal Mail Service (But not just for the Royalty alone)
The Modern Army (British "Redcoats" and a Proper Professionally based Regimental system are firmly established from this period onwards)
The Modern Navy (via Samuel Peyps and others)
The Civil Service
and many other institutions.
Cromwell is not a democrat in our modern sense, but without Cromwell refusing the crown would we really have become a Parliamentary Democracy or like many other European Countries eg: German, Russia, etc only so in more recent times?
Churchill called Oliver Cromwell a great bad man, and I think he had many faults, but he stands as a giant influence in the history of Britian and modern Britian as we commonly understand it really started in this period.

Blackberry Cat , if one wishes to remain an individual in the midst of the teeming multitudes, one must make oneself grotesque

smiley - applause agree with most of this but I think it was Lord Clarendon, royalist historian and 1 of Charles II ministers who first called him a great bad man

Churchill also said this Cromwell and when the Germans were about to invade Britain in 1940 he authorised the code word for the start of the resistance as "Cromwell".
I found it staggering in the recent Great Britons poll he was acknowledged so little and yet Princess Diana did so well. I have met Princess Diana and I did not feel I was in the presence of Greatness. I am not a republican but I think some rebalancing is in order.

true, if someone wasn't in the news recently they get ignored by most people
I don't think anyone except me voted for my greatest Brit, Simon de Montfort
