Oliver Cromwell actually played no part in the infamous purge of Royalist MPs led by Colonel Pride. It was this event that led to Charles' death warrant being signed. Thus it could be said that Cromwell was unfairly portayed as a bloodthirsty radical.

I have seen it written that the third signature on the warrant was that of O. Cromwell.

Me neither. I am just passing on facts as recorded in Moncrieff's Kings and Queens of England.

There were 59 signatures on the warrant. Cromwell's was third.

That's the monarchy for you. At least the radicals made the pretence of a trial. Didn't they dig up Cromwell's body, hang it, then return it to his wife?

hadn't heard the part about returning the body to his wife but it wouldn't surprise me
