There are some good choices... Birdsong, The Twits (A personal fave of mine, deliciously dark), 1984.

Amy the Ant - High Manzanilla of the Church of the Stuffed Olive

I think it's a great programme. It's certainly encouraged the kids in the skools I've been in during this past term to pick up a book or two.

I personally am going to find it very hard to watch any future Portsmouth matches without remembering that their utility forward is a fan of Tintin cartoons...

The Nitpicker

When you consider that Lua Lua only came to England when he was 10 years old it is quite some achievement that he can read English! So many of the people who come to England that late have a very hard time learning to speak let alone read English ESPECIALLY Zairois in Forest Gate (it is rather like a home from home where there is no overwhelming NEED to learn English because you can do everything you need speaking Lingala).

I think it is GREAT that these footy stars are prepared to back a campaign to encourage reading - ANYTHING that will encourage children and teenagers today to read is very important otherwise the skill will die out in the near future! Reading is just NOT cool!

Well done you footy stars! Just don't mock until you have been to visit my school and seen how poor the reading skills of some teenagers are! Then you may realise the importance of this campaign.

great, great, great! nitpicker goes a bit far saying "reading is not cool", but these kinds of role models inspire exactly the kids for whom that is exactly the case!

i'll take the opportunity to talk about a fantastic french reading programme called the "prix chronos". a short list of books is judged by a panel consisting of two distinct groups: 9 year olds and nursing home residents. there are field trips (in both directions) where the two groups meet each other to discuss the books.

I'm worried by Chris Kirkland's choice - I think its a cry for help and he's being 'bothered' by Sammi Hyypia.
