Hi Fizzy,

Don't know whether you've tried this already, may be worth a go.

The above is a link to Technical Support at Macafee. On that page more or less in the middle is a 'Virtual Technician' troubleshooter which you can use to check the installation of macafee products. It will detect any errors in the software and rectify or help to rectify as required.

I came in to say something useful, now what was it? *scratch head*

Ah yes smiley - eureka have you checked to see if your software has a self-fix bit to it? If you go to the control panel, to where you can disinstall, you will find that some programmes have a self-diagnostic on them.

Here, have some smiley - cheesecake - it's strawberry custard tart, but what they hey smiley - winkeye

If I could get my hands on that virtual technician I'd wring his virtual neck - he was another one that kept going so far then telling me that it couldn't be fixed and it was from this programme that the sound advice to uninstall the programme came. As stated earlier, when I attempted to uninstall it I couldn't complete the uninstallation because some activex controls were missing.smiley - grr

I'm going to sign up for a computer course I think.smiley - geek

smiley - rofl ... a bit like my three month saga with techies, to finally have an Irish girl come on the phone to inform me that my house does not like broadband. She was right - it only works if I plug into the test socket. Go figure.

Hope it doesn't take you that long to sort your pc out though!

Ooops, so much for that suggestion then. smiley - yikes

Another way perhaps, if you have the original discs, have you tried putting in the disc and letting it run, sometimes it will automatically remove and reinstall the program or as mentioned earlier may give an option of repair.

The only other way to de-install would be through windows explorer if add/remove programs in control panel doesn't work.

I hate computerssmiley - steam

But, even worse they appear to hate me.smiley - wah

None of the self help thingies worked - I even downloaded an I can fix your activex and stuff programme and it cost me £25 - but it didn't work.smiley - grr

When I used system restore and took the computer back to the middle of January - it didn't work, but strangely when I took it back to the day before all this started it has worked - after a fashion - and the only thing which is still iffy is the black icon.smiley - erm

I think this whole thing began when the computer decided it should have IE7 - things started to go all smiley - weird to varying degrees after that - now in my wisdom I've tried the microsoft site to see if I can get IE6 back - but I can't find it.

Give me strength.smiley - rolleyes

"No Macafee, hance no real solutions, All I can find is about the shield turning gray, not black.

On the musof site you can let the script check what updates have been installed on your system. If you get the list of updates you can then select uninstall update. IE7 was an update.

On the other hand, have you checked the Windows Security Center ? There is a page with listed programs regarded as trustworthy for internet access, check to see if Macafee is in the list. "

Thank you for dropping by TiT, my windows firewall is not switched on if that is what you mean, because the mcafee has a firewall, and the icon is most definitely black not grey.smiley - weird

It's just occured to me I have had this computer for over a year now, is it possible that I have to pay mcafee something to renew a subscription or something - just a thought - could they be causing all the mischief.smiley - erm

I had this problem. It turned out that I had a trial/free version of Macafee from AOl. I contacted Macafee support online and after a while I was sent a link to a download site where software is available to remove all of the files. I have since changed my pc and do not have the information to hand. It is a well known problem. Hope this helps

Yes, I've sort of come to that conclusion myself - this computer came with a years subscription to mcafee, and I think that year is just about over.smiley - erm

I went onto the site tonight and renewed, so time will tell if it was the gamekeeper turned poacher.smiley - laugh
