I submitted this last summer only to find that the rules were being changed to include ferrets, but I have decided to restrict the entry to dogs and cats because ferrets and horses are another complication that personally I have no experience of, unlike for dogs and cats.

I thought I recognised this title!

On first reading it looks very thorough and well-written. Nothing to point out so far. Will read again later to make suresmiley - winkeye

Perhaps a footnote is needed to explain what RSPCA stands for for non-brits?

"Crufts had previously been unable to accept international entrants"
Crufts HAS previously...?

Wildlifesmiley - doh I've now got this image in my head of foxes swimming across the Channel carrying rabies! Is it a wide-spread thing in Britain anyway then? Or what?

RCVS Footnote explaining that? For those of us who are too lazy to follow links smiley - blush

On 28 February>>On 28th February

What sort of animal was Frodo Baggins?

How do I get hold of my Local Veterinary Inspector? Is there going to be one at the local vets?

Where do I get all the paperwork for getting my dog a passport? Is all of this easy to organise? How much does it cost? Do I just take the dog to the vets and say I want a passport and they'll help me organise all the tests etc or do I need to organise each thing separately myself?

I am actually currently considering getting my dog a passport so I'm highly interested in this article.

Actually I'm following you around because I'm too tired to pick my own articles to look at smiley - tongueout

Another thought...is this scheme open to all animals or only domestic ones or what?

I saw '5 new posts' and groaned - thinking how many mistakes have they found smiley - rofl

28 February is the standard EG formast for dates - we don't use th, st, nd etc smiley - ok

The paperwork can only be issued by a vet. Not all vets are LVIs, but most practices usually have one - ok will add a note smiley - winkeye You just say I want a pet passport and the vet will arange everything - you just turn up when they tell you and pay the bill smiley - laugh

I left out cost as it will become dated very quickly - but for interest sake it can cost upwards of £160 for the initial passport.

Will change "into the UK with a pet passport was Frodo Baggins and" to "into the UK with a pet passport was a dog called Frodo Baggins and " smiley - ok

"Crufts had been unable to accept"

"Crufts has been unable to accept" smiley - erm I still think had been.

Will explain rcvs and rspca!!

Bats can bring Rabies into the country.

have I answered everything?

Will work on changes tonight (probably after a hair of the dog smiley - winkeyesmiley - whistle)

Oh yes - for a long time farm animals and race horses have been able to cross borders but they are covered by other legislations.

The new rules will include pet horses which are not covered by working animal rules smiley - ok

Wildlife - quarantine cannot protect Britain from the spread of rabies by wildlife.

I'm still ponderous about this statement.

The main problem for the UK is in bats, as a (previously) water protected island it is fairly safe from foxes etc but it can be brought in by rats - along the chunnel or ships etc. I believe precautions are in place to stop rats coming in through the chunnel - electricified rat fences.

...and creepy-crawlies can get in on planes, in luggage, stuck to clothes etc.

Dunno if they can carry rabies though?

But I think that sentence is OK.

maybe that is where the dog fish originated smiley - rofl

smiley - fish

i think thinks like owls eating carion of mice/rats infectd with rabies - then eaten by foxes etc would spread the virus but since owls don't fly south for winter then it is ok. Although i am sure there are other prey that could.

The guy I mentioned in the entry was actually bitten by a rabid bat in 2002 and died - so it is a real threat.

Just a few sheets of paper - forms - nothing flash! Are you in the states? They have just been accepted (in the last year) into the scheme as a safe country for pets to return from - providing they have a passport etc..!!!
