"Right. Thinking of the title, and knowing Clive's penchant for puns, is it actually to do with pions rather than pioneers?"
A case of 'not only but also'. have +3 correct points, HD.
"Are both of these mountains home to handy pion catchers?"
Not exactly, but you're close. DGI +1

Okay, that's it: I've caught up.
Some very interesting ideas there, and fewer still close to the actual answer, but you're closing in on both the what and the why - good luck!

MMF - Keeper of Mustelids, with added P.M.A., is now in a relationship. Posted Jan 10, 2013
Worth a try.
So it's not observatories, rock climbing, skiing, cable-car, parachute, which I guess includes par ascending, (and gliding had already been discovered) and it's not plate-tectonics.
And not ancient ritual sites as evinced by 12930-1950 time frame.
This makes me think warfare activities?
Also the height makes me think aviation.
So ROV prototype?
Information technology like a form of semaphore, Morse etc?

Regarding the internationally famous Pikes Peak
hill climbing events about which you now claim
no prior knowledge I refer you to my Post 2.

See post 2.
Oops yes. I need more tea. umm what to do?
Since jwf mentioned it first and I didn't award a QI bonus, I think it's only fair if I rescind the +6 points I gave to Baron.
Sorry Baron.

"This makes me think warfare activities?"
Not really, more a hindrance than a help.
Also the height makes me think aviation.
So ROV prototype?
Nope.
Information technology like a form of semaphore, Morse etc?
We covered Morse Code already (I should know I wrote the question!)

None of those.

OK... rescinding the points regarding the motorized hill climbs is fair enough. But if you had insisted on giving me a for being mistaken about the age of the Appalachians, I'd definitely have cried foul as neither of the mountains in the question are in the Appalachians. It'd be like a football ref penalizing one of the tennis players on the courts behind the goal at the leisure center.

You are quiet safe Baron neither klaxoned nor quiet interesting.
Still in this game "0" is perfectly respectable.
I only meant in other context it might have attracted klaxon for being one of those bits of information that people generally assume is correct, but in fact isn't.

Right so referring to my previously stated position of being absolutely knackered - I'm getting an early night, so opportunities to quiz the quiz master for the next few minutes while I tidy up and clean ma' teeth and such and then you'll have to wait till tomorrow for more from me.

Aha. I was getting Pic du Midi mixed up with Aiguille du Midi. So you can ignore everything I said about Pic du Midi.
