QI - "Run for your life!"

Post 221

Argon0 (50 and feeling it - back for a bit)

Haven't read whole thread, but stab in the dark here at Russian Doctor in 1928 - Mendeleev - NO don't be daft he was Periodic Table not Physician, who do I mean?

The one who switched dogs heads over, lived for a bit then they died.... Was on QI... No doesn't sound likely would have mentioned testicles then....

smiley - erm No it was Joseph Mengeler who I have been thinking about - and he was German wasn't he...

Picking up on "Long Lived" - was this an anti aging (rejuvenating) treatment - a bit like Stookie Glands in Judge Dredd, which was, I think, based on using Monkey Glands in a similar way.... But that's Chinese isn't it? And we're talking Human "glands", which would be better at a guess if you can get them...

Not Mendeleev.

Or Mengeler.

All sort of true, excepting for the fact that most of those had already been solved.

I've not been back to mark this thread as I've just been thinking about other things and not focussed on QI at all.

I'll try and regain some focus and be back to write up the explanation and score the thread

Ok, answering from my android, so forgive if it a0 rambles, b) looks odd...

Silent Film link - film on similar theme - living a long time maybe - Nosferatu, or another incarnation of dracula... metropolis - future utopia

what else happens in silent films - scene setting or dialog written on screen, music played by orchestra while they are being shown...

A film of the island of dr moreau (sp?)

Vatican - dr was excommunicated because of his work "going against god"...
Is there a famouse picture or sculpture, or something featuring a man with three testicles?

Russian dr.... tried a few already, so here goes a few more: serge bulgakov (sp?) - dog head transplanter... actually can' thinlk of any more russian names... excspt stalin now...

Btw do we know where the experiments happened/where the doctor ended up having his clinic?

I take it that it wasn't Russia or the uk, maybe: usa, france, germany, italy (maybe in the vatican, but no...)

actually thyat gives me a bit of a possible link - castratos, much loved by the vatican, had their knackers removed....

Protestors: anti-vivisectionists (yup)
Two to find... vegetarians, other doctors with competing rejuvenating products, the church, the sufragettes...

Nope - it's more of a cultural reference, a cross-pollination of an idea....

>what else happens in silent films - scene setting or dialog written on screen, music played by orchestra while they are being shown...<

Good thinking... keep going.... smiley - ok

>A film of the island of dr moreau (sp?)<

I should have klaxoned that! smiley - winkeye Nope.

>Vatican - dr was excommunicated because of his work "going against god"... <

Quite the contrary..... DGI +1

>Is there a famouse picture or sculpture, or something featuring a man with three testicles?<

Well Michelangelo did have a thing for the boys, but such a rare treasure has thus far eluded art historians to the best of my knowledge

>Russian dr.... tried a few already, so here goes a few more: serge bulgakov (sp?) - dog head transplanter... actually can' thinlk of any more russian names... excspt stalin now...<

Nope.

>do we know where the experiments happened/where the doctor ended up having his clinic?<

Transplants were performed all over the world, I've got sources for operations being performed in France, Naples, Rome, Switzerland, Chicago, Kansas and, of course, San Quentin.

I take it that it wasn't Russia or the uk, maybe: usa, france, germany, italy (maybe in the vatican, but no...)

>actually thyat gives me a bit of a possible link - castratos, much loved by the vatican, had their knackers removed....<

The Castrati have already been `nd gone and earnt I think Taff a Klaxon.

If you can argon read the backlog - it''ll help,. smiley - ok

smiley - smileyI know, difficult on a handheld....

Silent films...
What else happened when showing silent films....

Wurlitzer organ...
Actors/actresses doing voice overs? (Not that i,ve heard of)

Silent films were all b&w ... maybe something to do with makeup...

Palying records at the movies ... transplant of technology from one area to another...

So the doc was made into a saint, or became a priest...

I take it is wasn't Voronoff as he only did monkey glands didn't he

Voronof was born in Russia in 1866, moving to Paris age 18.

A quick fact check shows he became a French citizen in 1895, so I concede the point.

Voronoff was French QI +6

Well I've been away from QI for the last few weeks - shall I call a halt to this and write it up?

I'll take that deafening silence as as "yes" - points and an explanation to be forthcoming shortly.

Right I've just marked the thread, couple of corrections to make

I've rescinded the DGI I gave for "the 1920s was the decade of.." as it seems to me now, that this was hardly an original contribution but was evident if you read the backlog.

Likewise I'm rescinding Argon's QI bonus for the same reason; I already disclosed Voronoff's nationality earlier in the thread.
