"This cake is seasonal rather than regional"
That'd be a grey, overcast and wet cake then...

Rod Posted Feb 10, 2010
a bit far fetched... not crumpets and/or muffins ...?

Taff Agent of kaos Posted Feb 10, 2010
seasonal as in it has a season in the name
like summer fruit pudding
or
seasonal as in the ingredients are only available in certain seasons
like rubarb crumble????

Seasonal in that whilst it is available all year round, it is associated with a certain time of year.

Revisiting some of the response, which may even be clues? (Oh you naive fool).
It is indeed a sweet confection. Though not as sweet as some.
Perhaps this is a clever way to say that it is not sweet but "tart".
You'd think Dundee Cake or Eccles Cake wouldn't you ? Fine British cakes of longstanding, Ireland sent Porter Cake.
How you underestimate our diplomats.
I could never underestimate a diplomat or politician unless I could find a way to slide under a snake's belly. Which might suggest that, unlike everyone else, who sent a traditional cake, the Brits sent something modern.
As hinted at in the title it was supposed to be a cake ~ that represented Britain.
Jaffa cakes. At least they are legally a cake.
This has hints that perhaps this item would not be automatically viewed as a cake.
Thus far it all points to the only possible answer.
Pop tarts and probably hand delivered to the function direct from the local Berlin McDonalds.
Unfortunately, I don't think pop tarts are seasonal.
Back to the cookery book.

Not mince pies.
Think of a confection associated to a time of year.
You are right I would not consider these a cake Pebblederook.

Now that sounds on the money to me. But I'm Australian and we don't have as many 'old cultural references' that you guys have

(the english did not sign those treaties of rome... am i right?)
i am guessing... plum pudding?
essentially a steamed cake (in my opinion)
(but then i am american)
(but i have made plum pudding)
(on a wood burning stove)
(heh heh heh)

Well it'd be a bit silly if you'd made it on a clay burning stove or an ice burning stove or a Canadian burning stove wouldn't it....
