The only 'germ' I have a little knowledge of from that era is the pandemic 'Spanish Flu' that was doing the rounds, cutting survival rates to 20% or so.....

Well I'll give Taff +3 for that.

It's certainly less that 10%.

However the reason is not The Spanish Flu smiley - bluelight-5

So what I really want to know is this:

In 1915, Henry Chapin began surveying orphanages and paediatric hospitals in America. He generated a truly horrifying statistic.

Infant mortality in 9/10 of these institutions was 100% by the age of just two years old.

My question is what was killing them?

pebblederook-The old guy wearing surfer beads- what does he think he looks like?

Was it the beginnings of the fast food industry. Orphanages "farmed out" their children to the suppliers, where they were used, not as regular workers, but more as fill ins...........................pies, sausages and burgers?

Oddly enough it's not child labour or malnutrition.

Both of which were suspected but the children were well cared for by the standards of the time and fed and watered precisely in relative safety.

But they all died.

Why?

I could see how concentrating children together in orphanages might provide ideal conditions for it to spread like wildfire.
