QI - Get down!
Malabarista - now with added pony Posted Jun 17, 2009
Are we talking about a case where a bird strike was actually somehow assumed to be a deer strike?
Or worse, a case where a presumed bird strike turned out to be a deer on the runway that got sucked into a jet engine?

Yes.

Taff Agent of kaos Posted Jun 17, 2009
a spring bok launched itself into a jet engine on takeoff and had to be identified by DNA as they thaught it was a bird strike, so they put higher fences around the airport

There were deer bits mixed in with it from something a bird had been eating? Carrion?

Clive the flying ostrich: Amateur Polymath | Chief Heretic. Posted Jun 17, 2009
Carrion - correct!

And that is the end to this QI.
I'm logged in via college at the moment so have none of my sources book marked to write up the story - but I'll do that when I get back.
Have a few other QIs on simmer, will get those up and running shortly.
Meanwhile hope everyone ejoyed themselves, with the possible exception of Taff who is probably Just grateful to escape with the clothes on his back!

This was the news article that sparked my interest for question-setting:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/25/science/25birds.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&partner=rss&emc=rss
You can find all the details that this question was based on in there, including the Avian DNA database, the NTSB and the Flying Deer and also the man with the ironic name and an amusing anecdote about invertebrates.

The bit with the deer reminds me of when I was a child.
I was being home-schooled for a year, and my parents had bought me a microscope.
Yarreau (a biologist, and my mother ) came up with a forensics experiment for me - she handed me a piece of tape which she claimed had hair collected from the sofa on it, and I was to figure out which of the pets had been lying there.
It turned out to be the *horse* Took me all day to figure out, too.

It is something of a marvel:
The Venus de Milo, The figure of Madonna with child, The Grand Canyon, The Western Sprial Arm of the Galaxy across the night sky; Taff's klaxon ratio.
Breathtaking.

Likewise. (most of the time)
Not quiet the road to Damascus, but University cured me of alcohol - nothing suspicious -other than I got so bloody busy I forgot to go to the pub for 6 months. and the habit stuck.
I did get a first 1:1 out of it thought.
Not that's it's done me any good mind.
