Yes, Bob, that's what I meant. Doesn't need to be long, your example is just fine. smiley - ok

As for laconian's points, there were a few in a later post, asking you to explain Mansio earlier than you do, and a few other things.

I've seen you explained it, but much later in the text. I think you should do it at first mention. smiley - ok

There are still bits of Mansio information throughout. You mention it being a way station in the bit for Rochester and in footnote 8 for Dunstable. Move all the information about the Mansio to the first mention in the first paragraph.

What laconian said.
I think the key is quite clever, although with a long entry like this, it requires much scrolling. I wouldn't know how to do it better, though, except for maybe placing it at the top of the tour, not at the bottom.

Hello Bob,
This is an excellent article. I've lived and worked for over 18 years on the Lichfield/Wall stretch of the A5 in my role as a breakdown patrol and police work. I know the area very well.

I think this topic and the way you have covered it may actually be better as a Uni project. There is so much info on Watling street that frankly I think would be difficult to cover in one article. You have included a lot of detail which makes for interesting reading but already the article is very long and there is loads more that could be added I feel.

Perhaps do similar to what Skankyrich has done on the coast walk series he's doing, break it up into blocks/sections.

Just a thought anyway. Darn good read all the same.smiley - ok

Hi laconian
Good point

> a way station in the bit for Rochester<
This is the reason Seddingbourne came into existance and needs some explanation. I have sorted it a bit.
>and in footnote 8 for Dunstable<
Has been removed but the ref to the foundation of the town as a way station is I think important is there a better way to do it.

PS thanks for the interestsmiley - biggrin

Hi Bob, I haven't read it yet but I like the idea.

I notice you haven't put links in yet, so here are a few that might be useful.

Most of the Romans entries are at C54828 but there's also an entry on Verulamium at A6643875.

"The Battle of Watling Street.
The Roman Governor, Gaius Suetonius Paulinus and a force of 10,000 men defeated Boudicca and her army of 80,000 in thes area in AD 60. The burial mounds of the 80,000 who were killed, could still be seen by the traveller at this time."

My understanding was that though this is suspected by some historians and archeaologists to have been near Mancetter, no-one knows for sure. Is that not the case?

Could you please re-read this, Bob? There are quite a few typos, misspellings, missing spaces, extra spaces, missing full stops and so on. smiley - smiley
