Ever since Ive added some posts on to "My Journal my page seems to take ages to load when I return to it. Is it because of all the journal entries I have added, or is it something else? I am on a dial up ISP, but this has just started recently.smiley - tasmiley - ok

making your page larger does increase the load time.
Do you have a browser like Opera where you can see the size of the page you are loading?

looking at your journal entries, they are quite long, so yes, they are probably the cause of the slow(er) loading.

I've found, and I'm not the only one who's found this, that h2g2 has been slightly slower at loading over the two days. This would also increase the page loading time. smiley - smiley

I've noticed that h2g2 has been slower. However, I've also had reports that the whole of the internet has been slow. This is usually connected with major events (about which we may or may not be allowed to talk) but can also be due to the actions of hostile spammers or net terrorists (of which there have also been recent reports). smiley - erm

If, as mentioned on Yahoo, the BBC have independently noticed a higher loading on their site, then the slowness is at least partly due to local popularity and it's probably time to beg another server etc from the BBC powers that be... smiley - winkeye

hey smudger i supose you also get frustrated in traffic jams after all if you had to open a book to obtain or find the information needed it would take far longer besides the time taken to load page is only a blink of he eye in real time

No not really. as my PC has only a 6GB hard disc and my ISP is a dial up, so its normally slow any way, but it has been even slower recently.

have you tried on first log on load two or three pages that you know you will be visiting then minimise them as you are working on the first one thats opened or run different links/pages on different browsers i.e windows ex internet ex or up load a browser from operea that does not have two many links on bars

I am new to this Internet & still learning, cant outite understand your idea? but this is what I normally dosmiley - ok 1=go on line, 2=go to favourites & click on to here, 3=log in, then go to my space. I never have more than one site on screen at any time. Then when finished here log off & go to my other favourite site. I hope you understand what I mean?smiley - cool

I have started keeping more windows open so that I can be reading one page while the next one I know I'm going to need is loading. I'm on dial-up. I don't think the in-house BBC or broadband people (eg in colleges or even at home) appreciate how slow it can be.

Hi Sef, Your right there, I only wish I could afford the Broadband myself. I sometimes go online at my stepsons house who is on Broadband, and what a differnce!!its so much faster!. I was going to upgrade to a larger disc PC but I was told that it would make no difference. So I supppose I will just have to sit & wait & waitsmiley - laughsmiley - laughStill I have nothing else to do?smiley - cool

Smudger, there are a few things you can do to speed up.

1. Tick the 'always remember me on this computer'. The system will set a cookie so next time you get to h2g2 you will be sent directly to your own page. To have this working, you must NOT logout, and your cookie must not be deleted when you shut down.

2. Check the settings for caching. Use cashing for pictures, as they never change, but have normal conversations checked always.

3. On h2g2, do NOT use frames or expert mode.
Goo is much slower than alabaster or plain.

4. Look in http://www.winguides.com/registry/ if you can tweak your registry for faster working.

5. Use a faster browser like Opera or Mozilla instead of the horrible IE.

1. This behaviour will lead to you forgetting your password and not being able to login from any other computer.

2. Pictures do change on some pages. I'd get nowhere fast in the CA group with caching on.

3. Is brunel beneath your notice?

4. No comment other than be careful/afraid, very careful/afraid...

5. The BBC only officially supports IE. Various things won't work properly in those other browsers.

Firstly thanks to you both for your help, but Im afraid I have not a clue as to what was said, as I am new to this PC worldsmiley - wah I use "Brumel as I like it and can find things easier with itsmiley - ok
I have cleared all the stuff out of my journal, but its still as slow as beforesmiley - erm
I think its the the two "motion pictures I have on my home page thats causing it, but I like themsmiley - ok. The problem is not when logging on to H2G2? its when returning to my home page after reading or posting! I will just have to live it Im afraidsmiley - cool Until I can afford Broadbandsmiley - laughsmiley - laugh

Some people have blamed the influx of new users (as a result of all the advertising the BBC have done). Jim has previously blamed commercial web-search bots and of course there are some local ones. smiley - winkeye There have also been some general problems with the internet as a whole being slow (possibly as a result of spam attacks). However, there now seems to be very little difference in performance at what used to be the "good" times of day to login and when I'd checked the online list there were not that many people. So I can't help thinking one or more of the servers is dying for other reasons (including internal updates or testing).

We have noticed that it's been slower than usual lately, and I've mentioned it to Natalie (who has also noticed) to see if we can find a reason other than increased demand.

We do realise how slow the site can be, and how frustrating this can be - both Abi and I were extremely active Researchers before we were Editors, and we both accessed the site from home, with dial-up connections. And there have been improvements made to the site which have increased the speed it loads at since then. You young 'uns don't know how lucky you are. smiley - winkeye

I've even used the 28k modem at my parents' house on occasion. smiley - zzz
