Sad Day for h2g2
Lightman Started conversation Mar 18, 2003
With such a vast amount of threads, there seems no right place to post about the subject on every ones hearts.
This is a sad day for society as well as hootoo. We are mirroring what his happening within our society. As war is causing fragmentation's. I will not print my views for or against, all I read there is a lot of strong feelings.
I want so much for this site to be something special, and grow, I volunteered to be an Ace, It saddens me today that some have felt strong enough to resign as a volunteer. I personally will miss their knowledge, and wit! However I fully understand your feelings.
However I want the site's experiment re moderation to succeed as indeed I think we all do. Censorship is emotive, debate is important!
In such a large and politically sensitive origination the need to monitor, and attempt to produce a theoretical balanced view is hard, and can sometimes be distasteful to some. I can understand the view to direct all material re the war, to one place that can be monitored. (Where we do not have to worry about moderation) As to anonymity, the Government if it so wishes can find out who says what and from where already! (so we are told)
The BBC is not the only body to put in place some form of censorship at work about the war.(I to am not allowed to view my ideas at work)
I have no idea's as what is best, however its' not the Italics who are receiving the flack! If we are to grow, we will accept this to be part of the sites growing up, and find agreements, for the time future schisms appear.

*nods in agreement*
The decision to centralise debate - while one may not agree with it - is understandable.
I, too, will be sorry if people resign etc - but I can also understand and appreciate the strength of their feelings.
I will continue to support the italics - because I feel that, regardless of their opinions they must implement the policies that are made. I am sure that they act for the good of h2g2 in general.

Hello Lightman and Feisor,
Thank you very much indeed for making such constructive comments about the current situation.
We're very aware at the moment that we're trying to implement a policy that isn't entirely popular, so to get feedback that seems to fully appreciate the situation we're in is really helpful.
Thanks again,
Natalie

Yes it must be very difficult for you to have to work within a policy handed down from above that makes no sense. You have my deepest sympathies

I too sympathise with the italics, imo you all do a very good job under what must be very fustrating circumstances.

Say, Lightman, where do you work? (if you're not allowed to voice your opinion?)
Just thought I'd pop along and voice my support for the Italics. You're doing a good job under difficult circumstances (you should've seen the number of e-mails Abi had overnight on ACEforum!)
The Beeb has a duty to be impartial and like it or not we have to stick to it. At least their not letting us behave like the papers

I am with you too, I mailed Abi overnight as i felt she may have quite a few 'unhappy' mails and wanted to show support for what is obviously a very difficult situation.
This is part of the email...
"The format of the site and peer moderation scheme is something that
no-one wants to put at risk. And ironically enough I have come across
a couple of posts from researchers/ACEs that, having posted on The
Great Debate forum, stated how annoying it is to have to wait
overnight for moderation, and how far we had come on h2g2 (compared to the other BBC sites) with much less restriction etc (eg allowing
external URLs)
Perhaps this will serve as a valuable reminder to what it will mean if we lose the peer moderation scheme."
I do not envy the Italics at all and think they should have and s to help soothe away the stress.

Just thought I would also come and give my support for the Italics,
It is a BBC policy, and like it or not it is here, I will not resign just cos my boss has done something that I don't like, especially when it is not my boss that has made that decision
but I understand the feelings of them that do,
lets hope it will all end soon

I was one of those who posted to the ace forum overnight (because that was when I found out about it), as I felt and feel strongly about the issue. I am not one of those who felt it a resigning issue, although I understand why some people did.
I hope I was clear and if not I wish to make it clear here that regardless of the strength of my feelings I do understand that these problems are not of the making of the Italics. It is obviously a difficult and busy time for them, and they deserve our support.

As a long term ACE I unfortunately had a clash between what was being implemented here and what is currently happening IRL to me.
I do not want any potential sleeze to be dug up by potential political opponents at some point now or in the future and it was with great regret that I faced no other option but to hand in my badge. For those of you who remain I wish you all the best and will try and help out if I can by pointing out lost souls to you if I catch you online.

There are many and varied complicated reasons why I made this descion one of them is a letter which is pending publication in a newspaper as we speak.
It was with deep regret that I found remaining as a volunteer on site untenable. I do not wish nor do I intend to go into it all here.

I will make no comment on the above posting as i do not know (nor wish to know) the details.
All i want to add to what has been previously said in this thread is that I respect those that have resigned for having the courage of their convictions and acting upon them.
Equally i respect those that are still here supporting the Italics, and so this policy, which we may or may not agree with, and acknowledging the follow on effect from it that 'a non compliance' to uphold it may have on this community.

So should I remove your posting from here: F19585?thread=43444 (see Post 20) in case it comes back to bite you on the bum?
