haven't got that many holt book, as I buy most of my books second hand, and Holt, like Pratchett and Harrison, only turns up in secondhand bookshops and charity shops ocasionally

Ok, you should read books by the following authors, Tom Holt, Terry Pratchet, Harry Harrison (the stainles steel rat series and the Bill the inter/galactic hero series) and Tom Sharpe, and consider reading some Craig Shaw Gardener, the alternative arabian nights trilogy is probably the best.
