Mornin' folks! (Or goodnight for some..
IIEM, please!
You Norwegian people!
You heard about Finn Kalvik feeling harassed by Tufte/Eia in Åpen Post? Saw it on Tabloid yesterday. Kalvik was there, so was Bård and Rolv Wesenlund. Bård repeatedly tried to apologize to Kalvik and explain to him that if he had told them how he felt about it, they would have taken that particular (how do you say "innslag") off the air immediately. Kalvik on the other side wouldn't hear of it, just kept ranting on about how horrible it all had been. Anyway, the point of my ramblings is this:
If mr. Kalvik really felt that harassed and stepped on, why didn't he say something to those who where doing it? It was a succes, and as long as Tufte/Eia didn't hear something else, they of course thought it was allright! They've apologised, and I think it's time Kalvik accepted that apology, or he'll end up coming out of this as the bad guy!

Mornin' Titania
Look at Freedom.... so cute sleeping in the sofa...
I'm so happy that the selfproclaimed kings of the free world (te Americans) finally has proven unable to organize an election... I wonder when USA will fall.

Hello One-Eye! We keep simulposting....
Finn Kalvik is Evol, and he should accept that. Anyway, if you're really far down and you're feeling picked at, it can be hard to tell. You really only want everyone to shut up and leave you alone, and you're afraid that telling might bring more attention to you. On the other hand, those Kalvik-new was a great skit ('cause that's the word, right? "Skit"?)!

Hi One-eye!
Hmmm, yes, it is quite surprising how impossible it seems to get a final statement on who won the elections...

There it is again. I've been following a thread about Americans being bashed. I have to admit that I have a somewhat predjudgist attitude towards USA as well. Not against individuals but what? The attitude? The culture? The politics?
Or something else? My parent's generation (Young in the 50's) had a unconditional admiration of anything American.
The American Dream was alive and kicking. In Europe, in Norway. Not anymore. So, what happened?
Sorry about this ranting, it's really too early in the morning..

What happened?
Well, for one thing, the rest of the world opened their eyes to the racial differences in USA.
To many bad things have been revealed about the "real" US, that our generation can't help but look at it with a kind of disgust (I know I can't - and again, not the people, it's something else). It's the double-standards that get's me! It's like "Oh, yeah, we're the greatest country in the world, masters of the univers, bla-bla-bla, we're so great, we even have 60-80 million homeless people, twelve-year-old kids on bikes doing drive-by's, and of course, we have a health care system that doesn't care for anything but the wallet!"
American Dream? Pah! American Nightmare!!
I really, really, really hope noone is very offended by this! If so, please tell me! There are definetely worse places to be than the States

I must admit I'm a bit prejudiced to Americans in common/general(?), but the individuals I've met at h2g2 have been really nice to me, so I'll just refrain from making comments...

JAR (happy to be back, but where's Ping?) Posted Nov 14, 2000
... or maybe it's a deepseated fear of becoming more and more like the americans ourselves. It seems we are, rapidly, being assimilated by those yanks, and I don't like it the least bit. But look at Freedom, this topic is covered elsewhere, and we're destroying a perfectly good dayworth of sleep.
Maybe it's all about the generation gap. Welcome to our rebellion. It's not as colorfull as FlowerPower or anything, though...

*suddenly sits up straight, rubbing her eyes*
Oops, must've dozed off for a minute there...did someone say rebellion? If so, I'm in.
You wouldn't believe the dream I just had...I was an election worker in Florida. I won't give you the details, but it was terrible.
IIEM, I think I need some more .

Sorry, but I'd just like to quote two postings from that thread:
'But it deminishes the thinker to think in generalisations. In other
words both the bashers and the bashees are losers in this one.
Americans are people too.'
'There's nothing wrong with Americans, French people or
Germans...but there is something terribly wrong about tour
groups. Unfortunately we tend to encounter other nationalities
as parts of a tour group and thus are our prejudices formed.'
We're ALL more or less prejudiced - in this forum I guess a perfect example is the Norge-/Sverige-historier...

Guess you're right T
And Freedom, you have my deepest sympathies, it must've been awfull!
Sorry if I started ranting a bit there, but it's just that there are some subjects that just get me started...
I'll now refrain from making more comments to the topic, at least in this forum
IIEM, another coffee please.

One of the great science-theorists (Kuhn or Popper i think (imagine dedicating your life to the science of science! (Yes, I'm taking the exam philosophicum next week...))) said something like:
"No judgement without pre-judgement". Prejudices are a part of us, and they should be. And we should work on making those prejudices as accurate as possible.

It just struck me:
With the amount of activity in the cafè today, is anyone getting any w*rk done? If not, why bother?
Sounds good to me JAR. A discussion is best started when someone gets provoced by something. What better way to provoce someone than giving them an inaccurate and non-flattering description of themselves...

I think what's really bugging me is that after I read that terrible book " Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand, who is preaching pure fascism, I think I see more and more of that filosophy showing through in the American society.
And since the Norwegian society is being governed by the aforementioned generation from the 50's..... I'm getting nervous.
That should teach me to listen to my bookstore-lady. She warned me.
I better go and do some w***. See you later.
IIEM a to go!
