Bob, is this purely about University courses? If so, you might get more comments if it was in the title somewhere! I'm afraid it's not something I know anything about at all, but I'll be of much help as I can be smiley - smiley

I think this is too huge a subject to eb covered by a single entry - every one of your sub-headers is worthy of an entry, indeed many of the individualos you mention are worthy of entries in their own right.

There is also a strong arguement you outline at the start about whether study of ancient civilisations have any value.

In other words, I'd say pick of section of this and write about it.

This was a flea market rescue as is. I am beginning to think you are right, and this thing needs a big re-think thhis might end up as an introduction to a uni entry/

Any one else got ant ideas on this I would be very gratful.

There are a fair few typos and the like, and you've missed out a few writers and historians I would definitely mention if I were you. Is that the sort of feedback you want now, or do you want opinions on the piece as a whole?

Take your time this was a rescue from the flea market and this coukd grow and grow, and if so I will need some guidence and help as this is at the outer edges of my normal field of interest. I may even have to consider a hand over or ask for a co autor to help...

"The Classics of Greece and Rome," -> "classics"

few would suggest it was dieing just yet" -> "dying"

"Greek and Roman history writers include,

Sallust 86-35 BC. Political historian.
Thucydides 450 - 380 BC. Historian. 1"

You absolutely must mention Herodotus here, he is the father of history after all! I'd say Tacitus should get a mention too.

"Usually divided into the archaeology of Ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt, usually studied in conjunction with a related history course." Can you get rid of one of the "usually"s?

"[i.e. the physical remains of civilisations]." I don't think square brackets are allowed in the EG. They get used again later too.

"Xenophon of Ephesus 430 - 360 BC Historian cavalry soldier and author." -> comma between "historian" and "cavalry soldier".

"Caius Plinius Secundus3 23 - 79 AD Roman historian and nauuarlist." -> "naturalist"?

"Thanks to the concentration on literature the study of Ancient Greece is often concentrated on Athens, at the expense of the other Greek city states." Can you explain that this is because Athens had more literature and more that has survived than the other city-states?

"Tryphon 55 - 5 BC Writer of grammatical treatises and dictionary’s.
Pamphilus of Alexandria 1st century AD Lexicographer." I'm not sure these types of writings count as literature really. Also it should be "dictionaries".

Aristophanes needs to be mentioned with the playwrights.

"Is The study of Ancient Egypt, Egyptology can be either" -> get rid of the "Is".

"often have strong links to Politics; Philosophy and Language departments" -> comma not a semi-colon

"- Politics thanks to the debt modern politics owes to Ancient Greece - Athens in particular - and Rome" too many hypens, it's a bit tricky to follow.

I'll probably have more comments later, for now I'm off to find you some EG links. smiley - smiley

I have to agree that this would make quite a spectacular and ambitious Uni Project. That said, I really don't know if the community is up to such a huge undertaking. To be done right it would need an author or authors who have studied the subjects and I think it would probably still take a few years to write.

As an introduction to the field of study I think this does an adequate job. This is an area I think I would enjoy studying, but what are the practical applications of such an education? I know you touch on this some, but could you expand on it?
