Jules has been on another trip!
Obviously I have had to research the odd date/fact but much of this was gleaned from my visit to this lovely place

I haven't finished reading this, but I love these entries about special places
Your first link to Eltham Palace doesn't work, I can't find out why not, but here is another link which has even more photos anyway: http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server.php?show=ConProperty.103

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho Posted Jul 3, 2006
Before I get down to the usual minutiae I think two things stand out which need to be addressed.
1) The Courtaulds need to be introduced much earlier so that the reader doesn't keep wondering who they are.
2) Apart from the introduction there are no paragraphs longer than a sentence or two throughout the entry. That makes the sections look almost like a series of unordered lists missing their bullet points.

I hadn't noticed that - it's just how it turned out! Will go and see if I can stick things together a bit. I have to say, I was trying to keep to what I knew rather than stuff found elsewhere - maybe there's scope for fleshing out my current paragraphs with facts gleaned from wider research? I just find it tricky as that leaves one open to accusations of plagiarism, especially when only a few books/sites mention the place.
Courtaulds earlier - will sort
Bel - will look at the link,

I've just found out what's wrong with your link: you've left a blank space between the www. eltham...-that's why it doesn't work

JulesK Posted Jul 3, 2006
Too late - I've swapped it for your suggestion!
It doesn't matter as I know EH mention the other site on their website anyway

Yes, I've seen that, but I just had to find out what was wrong
I agree with Gosho, an earlier explanation who the Courtaulds where would be good. Btw, that sounds French, were they English millionaires when they bought the palace ? Oh, and you say that Eltham mansion was mantioned in the domesday book - when did it become a palace ? ( Sorry if you mentioned it and I didn't notice, it's the heat )

JulesK Posted Jul 3, 2006
Hmm, you know I queried that myself when writing it - would it be obvious that it became a palace when royalty moved in (as I assume happened)?
Maybe that needs to be clearer somehow.

I told you it's the heat, you're right, it was probably called 'palace' after the church lst/gave it to the crown.

I could be wrong here - cause I'm working from memory, but didn't the place belong to William I's half-brother Odo, the Bishop of Bayeux ? If so I'd say that was worth a mention.

This is a really good article!
You might mention that it can be booked for weddings & other events. I went to a family wedding there the year before last - they had the ceremony in the art deco circular hall, and the reception in the Great Hall. (I remember that they didn't allow kids at the wedding, which I thought was a bit snooty).
One piece of trivia. The palace lies not far from the bus-stop at which Stephen Lawrence was murdered in an unprovoked racist attack in
April 1993.

Neat Entry, Jules
Eltham Palace is where the wardrobe malfunction that lead to the founding of the Order of the Garter took place. I don't remember exactly, but didn't some Plantagenet or other thoughtfully hitch up a lady's accidently-dropped underwear?
'Honi soit qui mal y pense' is the motto of the Order. I'm not too good at Latin, but I think it translates as a kingly sort of 'B*gger you if you think I shouldn't have'.

Looking good. Perhaps you could put in some more links too and expand the last paragraph.

A very enjoyable read for me.
Since I'm one of those ignorant americans (though I did NOT vote for the MOST ignorant american) I would have found a link or footnote about the Domesday book helpful.
I think I would have also found a link or a footnote about the spectacular wooden hammerbeam roof helpful.
(this link has a sketch of a hammerbeam roof http://www.britainexpress.com/architecture/perpendicular.htm)
Who knows, if I keep reading entries like this one, I may become less ignorant - ahhh, who am I kidding, that would take reading plus comprehension.

Nice entry I haven't got around o reading it in details for peer review commenting but it's a good entry on the place...I visited it a year or so ago and one of the things which has always stuck in my mind (apart from the building and grounds) was the display of what people wear and tear do to various different fabrics etc. It's amazing the damage people touching delicate fabrics can do in a very short time.

It's not quite ready, VV, I need to have a look at the latest couple of suggestions.
Been busy these past few days.
