>>I guess that explains why there is nothing about the 2nd world war
Please look at my entry again. Many of the things are updated except language.

'This caused America to stop importing aviation fuel to Japan...'
on't you mean exporting?
The following section is so contracted as to be confusing:
'Come summer Japan invaded French Indochina and occupied its naval and air bases. Japan then attacked Pearl Harbour, forcing America to join World War II, which they did and as a result Japan started to retreat. Two atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan at the beginning of August and after the bombings, the Soviet Union entered the war against Japan. Japan surrendered on August 15 and a formal Instrument of Surrender was signed in 1945 on the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.'
i.e. Why did the A- bombs have to be dropped on J. if they were already in retreat?
Why was it necessary for the S.U. to enter the war against Japan? (I thought that the Japanese surrendered immediately after the 2nd A-bomb?)
A.

>>At the beginning of 1941 Japan signed a neutrality pact with Russia and increased pressure on France and the Dutch colonies regarding economic matters. Come summer Japan invaded French Indochina and occupied its naval and air bases. Japan then attacked Pearl Harbour, forcing America to join World War II. America dropped two atomic bombs, one on Hiroshima and the other on Nagasaki, during August.
This reads like the US dropped the bombs in August 1941 as revenge for pearl harbour, rather than in 1945 after years of fighting on various dozens of islands around the pacfic.
Also wasn't a lot of the of Japan's expansion during the 1930s because of their lack of usable land. This was certainly the reason for their invasion of China

"three big islands called Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu"
Hmm....

what are you trying to say Gosho?

Fruitylicious, that's four islands. It needs changing I think Japan is too big a subject for a single entry unfortunately I don't have the time to help but maybe you should remove this from peer review while you work on the comments so far, possibly write separate entries for each subject? Like "Japan's part in WW2" "Japanese Culture" "Geishas - Japan's Mystery" "Japanese Food" "Bonsai Trees" not sure if you're getting my drift but with thorough research this topic would be fantastic. I apologise if there's already edited entried on these subjects I don't have long enough to do serious searching sorry. Best wishes with your project Fruitilicious Opti

It's fine to have this in one entry - more detailed aspects can have separate entries afterwards.

'It's fine to have this in one entry'...
although, IMO the section on 'Festival' forms a disproportionately large amount of the Entry, and would perhaps be better as a separate Entry
So, in this Entry just have a short para about the types of festivcals held in Japan.

I definitely agree with your comment.
Big Al what does IMO mean?
anyway yes I agree the festival section is probably too big now

Gnomon - time to move on Posted Jul 7, 2006
Saying that Japan's location on the ring of fire at the junction of three tectonic plates causes it to experience a range of different climates is not very helpful or informative, even if it is indirectly true. It is its long narrow shape in a north/south orientation and the mountainous terrain causes the different climates.
Move the section about the Prime Minister doing Karaoke out of the history section, please.
You'd be better saying that children are taught about a thousand kanji at elementary level and another thousand at intermediate level rather than giving exact numbers.

'The Land of the Rising Sun' more commonly known as Japan (Nippon or Nihon) dates back to 8000 BC. --> needs commas: Sun', more....(....Nihon), dates
"as are earthquakes and tsunamis1." - the footnote is about earthquakes, so would it not make more sense to have "as are tsunamis and earthquakes1."?
Footnote 4 needs to come directly after '1940', and needs a space between Germany and Italy. Footnotes 6, 8, 11 and 15-17 also need to be moved to come directly after the word they refer to.
The films that you mention need to be in italics.

>> There are a few coastal areas where many of Japan's cities reside such as Tokyo
as I have pointed out before, there are 3000 islands so there obviously is going to be a lot of coast. Do you mean flat costal areas ??
You mention that Japan attacked French and Dutch colonies, but not the british ones

There are a few coastal areas where many of Japan's cities reside such as Tokyo
Cities don't "reside" - people do. Cities are "built" in flat coastal areas

Many more famous Japanese people exist such as singer and actor Takuya Kimura (nicknamed "Kimutaku"), Ken Watanabe who was in Memoirs of a GeishaGeisha - gei means "of the arts" and sha means "person" so ultimately Geisha translates as "a person of the arts". Geisha are not prostitutes but women specially trained in the arts such as nihon-buyoh (Japanese dance), Ikebana, poetry, etiquette, conversation, social graces and making the perfect tea ceremony. and The Last Samurai, comedian and movie director "Beat" Takeshi Kitano, singers Ayumi Hamazaki and Hikaru Utada, sumo brothers Takanohana and Wakanohana, Sadako Sasaki famous for origami, soccer star Hidetoshi Nakata, and young baseball pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka but they are not known in the west.
You should not use double-quotes unless you're adding a link.

You haven't updated (post 36) because you haven't taken on board post 35. Alex's <>
I also think there's too many footnotes, in one sentence you have 3 consectutive footnotes and it's very distracting:
<>
Your film titles need to be in italics
<>
Yoko Ono was John Lennon's wife, you should change that.
"from the Beatles" = "of The Beatles"
She herself an artist and a singer she amused three generations, not sure what you mean there, so I'll let you change it to something more appropriate, "amused" I would use for a clown or a comedian, which Yoko is neither.
Imagine (song title) needs to be in single-quotes, not italics.
<>
This needs rewording, it sounds like the toads create grease for cuts and wounds, which they don't.
