A Conversation for Talking Point: Douglas Adams vs Terry Pratchett
So it's Discworld versus Hikers then is it??
Matilda Posted Sep 10, 2003
It is clear from reading all these comments that this could just be a matter of taste - or the generation gap I suppose! I do agree that BOTH authors offer escapism and humour of a high calibre, but for some reason, I feel that this is ALL that Terry Pratchett offers. As I stated before, I also found getting into Terry's books a bit of an effort, and perhaps this shows that the difference may just be taste. Simply put, Douglas Adams had a sense of humour that I could instantly connect with and appreciate, whereas Terry Pratchett's was not initially homour I appreciated. After a while and several books later, I can enjoy his humour, but still think of Douglas Adams' books as superior.

Yet I found Pratchett's books easy to read, and I quite like his footnotes
Both of them have the same sense of humour I think, but they chose to express it in two different ways. DNA with his pragmatic, more cynical approach and Pratchett with his philosophies.

This conflicts tearing me apart
And where does Robert Rankin come in on this. I always thought they came as a kind of trio...

Well you could go with the:
Best comic fantasy writer= Pratchett
Best comic sci-fi writer= Adams....
Though I actually consider the Red Dwarf novels to be funnier... *ahem*...

i will have to admit that DA's books did seem a little more deeper in detail to the concepts than Pratchett's. but Pratchett does have some hilarious parallisms in his writings and there is definate philosophy in each writers style.
Rankin? who's Rankin

no, there's loads of people here who are seriously into Pratchett's work.
I for one, must say that I enjoy Pratchett's books more.
I'm not saying they're 'better' just that I find them easy and more fun to read.
Rankin is an insane genious.

Pratchett definantly read Adam's before writing the discworld.

hmmm... I thought his stories were a little over the top. TP and DA aren't as silly as Rankin. In my opinion.
