Are you going to mention the canal? I think the abandoned canal's the nicest bit of Newport. And are there any plans afoot to get it usable again? There weren't last time I looked, but that was quite a long time ago and these things do have a habit of regenerating themselves...

Sorry, I forgot to say basically nice work and I like it.
Perhaps for the boarding school bit *places* as far away as London?
And is Harper Adams worthy of a mention?

In the case of Harper Adams, I meant a slightly more extensive mention - it's quite a specialised place, no?
And having grown up near there (Eccleshall, as well you know), at the notion that there's plenty of nightlife in Stafford! Telford is also within reach - anything much going on there of an evening?

There's a damn sight more nightlife in Stafford than there is in Telford! Telford only has one nightclub which I've never been to, but I've heard it's a bit of a dive (so is Mainstreet, but there ya go...).
I'll add a bit about the canal when I have time, probably this evening.
I can add Harper Adams if people want, although this looks like turning into an entry about 'Newport and the Surrounding Area', whereas I planned on concentrating on just Newport, with small mentions of other places if necessary. What do you guys think?
I think an entry on Shropshire may be necessary, if there isn't one already - that could be my next project

I think its better to be specific than general. Exp. in a region with as many researchers as England

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho Posted Feb 27, 2004
This bit's been puzzling me since I first read the entry:
"It was founded as a new town in the 12th Century"
What does it mean exactly, especially as it's also mentioned that there was an existing settlement?
occations - occasions
the buttercross - should that be capitalised?

There was already a settlement there, but in the 12th Century they decided to turn it into a town, and built a proper town on the site. Or that's my interpretation of the sources anyway - what's in the entry is as much detail as I could find about that
I'm not sure if the buttercross should be capitalised or not

If it's a proper name then it probably, almost certainly, should.

Well, it's not the name of the area, just of the cross, and I think it *is* a buttercross, rather than being named 'The Buttercross' but I'm not sure

*jolted into action by bounce*
Final couple of suggestions... is it worth a mention of the perennial problem with being confused with the other Newport in Wales, or indeed the one on the Isle of Wight? In fact, a quick search on www.streetmap.co.uk turned up 11 other Newports dotted around the country - Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Isle of Wight, Norfolk, Gloucestershire, Gwent, Pembrokeshire, East Yorkshire, and Highland.
Transport links - I know there isn't a railway, although I think it used to be on the Stafford-Wellington line? But perhaps a quick mention for how to get to Newport, or how to get from it to Stafford, Telford, Shrewsbury or even (God forbid) Market Drayton? Roads, perhaps, but are there buses and are they any good? Also, come to think of it, Newport used to be on the main A41, but they built a bypass when I was young, and probably before you were born! Also another one for the A518 a bit more recently. Did this have a good or bad impact on the town - did it make the town centre more pleasant and free of traffic, but did it also mean people who used to stop on their way through didn't bother any more?
About that last sentence... would you consider changing the lasst part to read 'both of these places have a little more in the way of nightlife.'?
Oh, and finally, my first school - Lonsdale Primary, Eccleshall - once beat Longlands 5-1 away, despite them having a furrow in the pitch that seemed to be almost a foot deep
