Given that &#042 is the code for asterisk and the recent hash job by the italics here on h2g2, is this mere coincidence?

Indeed, yet it is a rather bizarre coincidence - where else are *'s 'banned'?

Oh, nowhere? Oh right... hash job... smiley - grr

Don't try sticking the code into your nickname as it gets converted into the text!

It’s interesting to see that DNA springs to mind so quickly

Of course, there are many Researchers who will point out that h2 isn’t an Adam’s-fan message board – although I find it curious both how often and where that same message is repeated - i.e. on threads!

Sure the EG is interesting and all - but then so is the whole darn (can I still say 'darn'?) Internet

For me, what makes h2 different and special is the community, which has grown up around the dna-software, which, in turn has grown in response to the community - to the point where it's good enough to be implemented on a whole host of BBC sites - although it does crash every so often... <smiley - groan>My analyst says I'm paranoid - but that's only cos he hates me </smiley - groan>

For me, it's seems that the benefits of that reciprocal arrangement / 2-way-street thing were either overlooked or ignored when the filter was applied

Maybe I'm not subscribed to the right forums, but it came as quite a surprise to me and quite a few others who I know have been around both h2 for quite a while - many of them with considerable (i.e. worthy of consideration!) experience of how software and wetware (us C-based lifeforms) can and do mix

So... yeah, maybe h2 isn't all about DNA the author... but it is about dna the chemical (or whatever it is)

Ignored, I'd say. They were certainly reminded of it often enough but then just chose to see it as some of us 'bitching'. smiley - sadface

Anyhow, I started a weblog during the BIG CRASH and probably won't be posting here so often in future. I reckon TPTB won't be too upset to see the back of me . . .

erm... that's how it works...

What did you want instead of 'the text'? The code symbols?

The code 'works' wherever GuideML/HTML is 'active' - and your name tag is one such place (unlike here in h2 threads)

Anyhoo... for instance... if you want the CODE FOR the asterisk symbol (as opposed to the symbol itself) in your 'name tag'

You have to 'deal' with the ampersand - which is a 'reserved' symbol - as per the 'less than' and 'greater than' signs

& : &
< : <
> : >

so... &amp#042; ==> *

whew!

Now tell me that's not what you were after... smiley - silly
