A nearly-complete answer from me, before I get told off for not wearing my cardigan...
>I am found wherever a bonfire burns;
Um?? Spoke?
>behead me and I am a coster's donkey;
Um?? Poke?
>change my head and I will make you laugh;
JOKE
>give me a tail and look for me in a pack of cards;
JOKER
>change my head and put me in the fire;
POKER
>change my middle and I am the dream of all rulers;
POWER
>change my head and I am not so high;
LOWER
>add yet another head and I am not so fast.'
SLOWER
As you can see, I started somewhere in the middle and couldn't track back from joke.
Well, I've made a start...
Great column!

EXCELLENT!!!
David wins!!!
Well done that librarian over there!
See, dear old Enid; those of us who grew up reading such gems can fathom this sort of thing, no problem!
Wonder how many Harry Potter fans know what a moke is; or a coster for that matter!
She's got loads of this sort of thing; if people like it, I can put one in every week.
for reading it (& obviously
for the compliment; we aim to please!)
Terri.

I had to look moke up in a dictionary, to check that it really was a donkey...
And I'm a Harry Potter fan,
Do I still win?
David - who enjoyed the rest of the column as well

Oh, phew.
Good old Enid Blyon, must have read most of her stuff as a kid - particularly fond of the Faraway Tree and Mr Galliano's Circus stories.
Thanks for the and the other prizes. Just goes to show their are some advantages to spending ones life in the library.

When I was a child, I always wanted to be a librarian. It seemed like my idea of heaven, to be paid for being amongst all those books!
I joined the library when I was 3; by the age of 6 I had read all the Enid Blytons & was starting to panic, realising that, wonderful though she was, she couldn't possibly write them as quickly as I could read them!
My favourites were the Famous Five & the Adventure series. My good friend Z has written a fine entry on "The life & works of Enid Blyton" at A779781 which you might like; do say I sent you!
Hope you've got your cardi on, it may be summer, but you never know.....
shhhhh!

I've got enough books for a library!
And I'm the librarian for our church. But no one seems to be able to find it.
I liked the Alfred Hitchcock "Three Investigators" series.

Hugh sounds familiar but the other fellow doesn't.
You better elucidate about both.
This was about, oh, 1974 or 5...
Very soon thereafter I began reading mostly sic fic, like Verne and Poe and Hubbard and Heinlein and Asimov.

Yes please Terri
tonsil - Ransome and Lofting are somewhat earlier than 74 - remember I am old! Ransome wrote the 'Swallows and Amazons' series - a bit like the Famous 5 but on water - and Hugh Lofting wrote the 'Doctor Dolittle' books.

Consider it done! I will be sending it Post haste; if anyone knows our friend Peregrine U217868 , better tell him to keep his raptor-like eyes peeled; this weeks H.O.T is heavily inspired by him!
Is no one safe? te he!

One thing that's worrying me...
Where did I mention the shh-and-cardigans world of the higher education library? I can't trace my comment anywhere, and feel very silly because surely my whole working life is dedicated to tracking down information?
A rather confused library-type person called David

You mentioned a cardigan in posting one and the fact that you spend a lot of time in libraries elsewhere. I guess that Terri combined the two facts - it often happens in fora you know.
I, of course, read the aforementioned books by borrowing them from our local library - a small hut-like building conveniently situated next to the village rec.

It was the quote from the article I was thinking of... I know Terri asked my permission to use it. but I don't know where I originally said it. Oh, dear.

I hope so!
*starts whimpering*
*realises he really can't pretend to be on a coffee break at the moment and had better get back to the exciting social science journals*
