Dear ZachsMind, I was out walking the dogs and happened upon your fine article. I would like to extend to you an invitation to
visit my home page. I have posted an article on the 'Curate's Egg' which, in a way, says much the same things as your article. From my page I also offer group trips for people waiting to be abducted by aliens and trips to pacific islands for the religious. Often served are beautiful kumquats, an interesting fruit, you eat the peel and throw away the fruit, and much, much, more. Occassionly chocolate are available. My door is always wedged half open for visitors. Perhaps we shall see you sometime later this year. As always Loonytunes

Lovely page. Personally I don't tend to wait for the aliens to abduct me. I have more important things to do. They know where to find me. The curate egg thing is a very good point. It took my brain a while to wrap itself around the idea, but that's just because I'm slower than mollasses. Very good point.

As Vegiman pointed out to me another similie would be: One bad apple ruins the other apples. One bad paragraph could ruin an otherwise fine entry.

Zach Garland Posted Jul 4, 1999
I'm not sure if that's a similie. I think a similie is something like: "her hair shone like the noonday sun and her eyes were as if the night sky were encompassed within them."
Or maybe that's metaphor? I can't tell anymore.

Jim Lynn Posted Jul 4, 1999
A simile is an expression comparing something with something else, usually using 'like' or 'as'.
A metaphor is a figure of speech in which an expression is used to refer to something that it does not literally denote in order to suggest a similarity
(thanks to http://www.dictionary.com for the definitions and the correct spelling of 'simile'.

Thank-you for the English lesson. If everybody knew things like that then editors would be like fully clothed figures of fun in a Caligula movie.

Thanks to Jim:
for the www.dicornhairy tip. I will use it as my speeling is not what I would like it to be.
Any chance of a spell checker added to the forum editors. NO NO say's Jim pulling his hair out,"don't you think I have enough to do".

Adds his tiny voice to the call for a spell check option

Zach Garland Posted Jul 11, 1999
I'd like to vote against the spell checker. This thing is slow enough to load on my machine at home as it is. A spell checker would just slow things down more. Besides, spelling errors gives a more personalized feel to the whole place and just adds to the fun!

Yes I suppose you are right in that respect. But to the self conscious like myself, it would be a great help. A spell checker could be incorporated with the "Preview Message" and highlight unrecognised words. This would not slow the rest of the program down.
I always seem to see spelling errors and mistypes just after I post the darn thing. vegiman

We would never agree on which English dictionary the spell-checker was based on. American, British, Australian, New Zealand. South Africa, Tonga, Canada, or maybe to make it real interesting Mandarin Chinese.

hello, had a scan of your convo after submitting(dont like those connotations already)to the edidtors a fairly important piece of literature re cooking pies whilst drunk. Had a look at editorial
in the thoughtfully provided & intrinsic search thingy, & ended up here. Good ideas (SPESHALLY THE SPELLCHEKA 4ME)
Is it really that bad, I mean in terms of submitting-no reply-undefined criteria etc. Bugger,I thought it was really fun to become
a "researcher" for the book I've always cherished.
As for someone who han't really had time nor inclination to go into chat rooms its ah...different 2be typing so much but as I said i like the concepts expressed in your tetatet. Keep up the forum. it,s apparently been weeks since you last posted, & check out the recipes 4 drunk carbon based lifeforms entry i've scribbled just so it says that someones been there.after all in space no one can here you and you've only got 30 seconds or so until you get improbably picked up.cheers. ps. vegeboy, your not from oz are you?

A lot has happened since I wrote that piece, MacDaddy. Vegiman is admittedly THE man to talk to regarding the Critique Fun Run. You can get the support and community interaction that will help improve your future guide entry submissions there.
AFTER I wrote that piece about field researchers critiquing each other, Mark Moxon put into effect a project that he hoped at the time would solve h2g2.com's backlog problem regarding submitted guide entries. He recruited me and nine other field researchers to operate as SubEditors. Our job is to go through the backlog and help fulfill the promise h2g2.com made to its participants. I must admit it feels good to be a part of that.
When I wrote "Those Who Can't Edit, Critique" I didn't know that less than two weeks later I'd be editing myself. I quickly ran short on time to make the critique fun run thing happen. Vegiman and many other very resourceful field researchers took the idea I had and made it happen, and I am very grateful for that. It's hard to believe that was three months ago. It's flashed by like a whirlwind.
I just wish I had had time to be a more integral part in the development of the Critique Fun Run, but things just went topsy turvy. For me it's now, "Those Who Can't Critique, Edit."
Life has a way of keeping me off balance.
