There I was, minding my own business, when I bump into some cave spiders. Took my time with them, but oh no. The little sods still killed me.

They are little f**kers.

I recommend buying up some speed potions and ranged weapons before contemplating level 2 or below, where the little swines always seem to reside.

now me personally, i just tank up on spells like stinking cloud and a scroll of phase door. Cast away till you run out of mana, phase door away, rest, then do it again.

i have to say, ive never died to a cave spider, norammly Lagduf the snaga and his 15 billion hill orc bodygaurds do it for me

Glasscock now has the prayer-spells "phase door" (it actually has a different name, but that's the spell) and "portal" (teleport) which are marvellous for dealing with critters like this. It's come in very handy if he finds himself fighting a mob of Hill Orcs or if he gets surrounded by f**king "explosively breeding" giant lice.

For low-level players (or non magic users) the options are a little more limited, though. I've been a ZAngband player for a while and got back into playing vanilla Angband and it's easy to forget how annoying those Cave Spider b**tards are! I really don't know who's idea it was to make them native to Dungeon Level 2, since they should be Level 4 at least.

My advice tends to be to build up to Character Level 4 or 5 before venturing into Dungeon Level 2. Getting some decent armour, some speed potions, some healing potions and ranged weapons is a nice idea too.

i like to scum around leve 6 maybe 7 (watch out for some uniques down there) with the identify spell, ID EVERYTHING i find and then make LOADS of money cause im selling staffs with 13 charges and stuff like that. Then i enchant my armour and weapon beyond belife, practice some spells with 13d8 damage or Fire Ball, 81 damage outright, 18 mana to cast.......... 95% fail rate

Picture the sceen. Im quite content mooching around level 9 with a warrior dwarf. Hes at -20 speed due to carrying a lot of stuff, but hey, who cares? i can drop some.

OOooo whats this? A HUGE amount of orcs, not doubt lagduf the snaga is in there
*changes into armour that's lighter but better (lacking resists, but 4 more armour points), finds biggest axe in bag*

I just lost my second-best character ever to Lagduf. I met him on level 8 according to the high-score board.
When a mage runs out of MP theres just nothing you can do, I tried to emergency-cast teleport self but I hit the 13% failure chance and that was game over.
Maybe we need some sort of Lagduf victims support group.

I haven't had the pleasure of him yet - I think my version is bugged with those little eight-legged f**kers, honestly. As soon as I get down a good few levels I'm surrounded by the little sods!

I've not met Lagduf with my current character yet. Glasscock has been "down low" (Mmmmm, baby) enough to have met him but has so far avoided his attention. I'm sure when I do, I'll have some tale of woe to report here.

Cave Spiders on the other hand? Glasscock shits 'em.

Oh and Acid, I'll get you added to the roster like I've been f**king saying I will for the last week.

im on Elandria IX. 4 of his ancestors have died to Lagduf. its not that he's hard. its that he comes with a million orcs.

The orcs were okay, I got them into a narrow corridor and lightning bolted them to death, I just didn't have enough mana to kill Lagduf & my teleport self (which I use when I have low MP) failed.

Don't you just hate it when that happens?

I thought I'd done well losing a character to starvation on lvl1 looking for the way out. Now I lose a mage, who knows cure poision, and had enough magic points and wasn't under attack to poison.

I am not awake today.

When I get home, I might have to get stuck into old Angband again. Haven't played it for aaaages. Mind you, haven't been around to play it - I never thought I'd say this, but maybe I should stay in more?

Do we have the technology for multiplayer Angband over the net? We could all stay in together :D

Multiplayer Angband? niiiiiiiice. difficult, but nice.

On a lighter note, try stinking cloud on cave spiders (with a phase door and maybe a turn stone to mud just in case) or fire ball if you have far to much mana
