A Conversation for Talking Point: Accidents and Disasters

Mothers are usually right!

When I was about seven years old, my mother bought me a new coat. It was a winter coat, camel colour. Of course I wanted to show it to my friends but my mother said no because I'd probably get it dirty. Anyway after a lot of "Oh, please mum, I promise I won't get it dirty" and the sad-eyes look, my mother finally gave in and said I could just go outside to show it to my friends but I had to go back home straight afterwards. I opened the front door, forgot there was a doorstep and fell off it right into a huge puddle! My mother wasn't very pleased as you can well imagine.

The worst accident I ever had was about ten years ago. I was cooking dinner and had just heated some oil in the frying pan when something dropped to the floor. I bent down to pick it up and my elbow caught the edge of the pan and tipped it over and the boiling oil went all over one of my hands. I remember looking at my hand and my first reaction was " Oh, my rubber glove is melting, I'll have to buy some more" Then I realised that I wasn't wearing rubber gloves, what was disappearing fast was the skin on my hand! I got myself to a hospital quickly and fortunately only had a second degree burn although my hand was completely immobile for a couple of months which was a bit awkward as it's the hand I use most of the time!
