What about role-playing games? Most fall under the 'board games' heading, imhoe. On the other hand, you get MUDs, which are much the same but less personal. On the other hand, any other computer RPG is more advanced in the areas of graphics and usually in world detail. On the other hand, those RPGs are hardly open-ended, as is life.
The problem with computers? You have to specify each option. However, you have the same problem to a lesser extent with board games. Only mind games solve this issue.

Imhoe? In your humble opinion - e? Typo, methinks... or has the surplus initial a meaning? IMAO, it has not! Can't use IMHO, it would be betraying He Who I Swore Not To Talk About In This Forum Because It Has Nothing To Do With Him Although He Doesn't Believe That.
Long pseudonym he's got.

'Imhoe' is a Terry Pratchett reference. I'm not sure which book, but it's the Nac mac Feegle in it.

Anyone who's a fan of pen-and-paper role-playing and cringes at the kind of weak fighting games that are labelled "RPGs" for computers or game consoles, raise your hand.
*stretching to have my hand held highest like Horshack on Welcome Back Kotter*

On the whole, I'd agree that pen-and-paper RPG's are better, but you have to try Neverwinter Nights!

U people should play Deus Ex (The greatest RPG ever made, however it really shouldnt be called an RPG - its not the greatest format of RPG, but its the best damn gave ever concieved. Warran Spector is king) and Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. They are much better than pen and paper, and u dont have 2 look like a complete geek cos u play them

I play Deus Ex--the warez version, but you can't get mods for it unless you have the original, unwarezed version of the game. Mods probably make it twice as good.
The only thing I disliked about the game was the fact that I couldn't choose to go with Paul earlier, or to stay with UNATCO. Mods take care of that, though.

A person looks like less of a geek sitting in front of a console or PC all day? At least playing pen and paper RPGs requires being around other humans, not holing up in our rooms, too enthralled by the box to even get dressed.

Oh! I created a posting about RPGs before I noticed this conversation. Sorry. I agree that RPGs are superior to both. I run a game set in an imaginary world of my own devise, the Amyverse. My rules, I make 'em up! Why bother with manuals and directions when an RPG allows one the freedom to make her very own system, if she likes? Plus, I have tyranical tendencies.

I'm at an age when I should know better. My computer was purchased both as a research, and a correspondence tool, but my grandchildren have "educated" me into the world on "on line" games, and they are, I must admit, addictive. Medal of Honour Spearhead is the ultimate shootemup, which one can play against opponents world wide. I also enjoy "black and White", which is a more task motivated game. So, provide they do not become too time consuming, and an addiction, then the graphics, and the interrelation of the player and the instant responses on the screen make computer games far, far superior to the old board games. But each to his own.....

Yours is a free-form RPG, then--sort of like storytelling, but you elaborate some bits more and don't necessarily plot out every event first.
I like those, but the ones I've participated in were horribly run.
