it's been illegal in the US for quite some time, but it still happens. Where i live, it's not racist at all. But my school is very very white, same with the neighborhood. Looking through last year's yearbook, i can count about 40 african-american students. That's out of a school of about 1600. Granted, ther'es probably some people not in the yearbook, and there's quite a large middle-eastern group around here. But it's still about 1/40 of the school, and that's not right. And mine's not even the most lily-white! There are schools on the east side, and north, that are hugely predominantly black. I dunno my point exactly, but isn't a little wrong that in a modern largish city there would still be such a geographical divide? It's honestly not a racist area, a few months back there were around three hate crimes -- i dont remeber exactly what they were-- and there were protests in downtown. It's such a strange phenomenon. White rich teenage guys try so hard to act black -- i know white guys with curly hair who try to grow an afro! weird. i'm not sure if all this is really discrimination, more like idolizing those who have succeeded through it? any thoughts would be most wlecome

Yes I can see your point. Where I come from(a little place we call the rock) there are hardly any minorities so I'm not talking from personal experience, just what seems to be right. There is one person in my school with one black parent(I think. he is darker). Everyone treats him really differently(not in a bad way) because nowadays it's cool to be black. I am assuming this is because you see alot of black rappers and such. Now I don't mean to say that black people are treated equal all the time because they are not, they should be, but no. But this is just what I have noticed. As to what you said about segregation, It only makes sense that this would happen. People often like to be around people like them. It isn't necessarily a good thing but it happens and it is why discrimintaion still exists, one reason any way.
Good point and nice post.

I'm assuming you mean that there are more than 1 black for 40 white people?
Don't you think this could also be caused by black people seeing it as being uncool to get an education. As far as I know, in some ghettos if you attempt to break out of the poverty, and get an education you will be considered a form of traitor. Maybe this is what happens here. But are you saying you do not at all see any attempts to keep blacks out of school?

it's a public high school, nobody's kept out. and it's not that there are no blacks in the city, it's that part of the city is almost totally black and the rest is almost totally white. which is weird, because it's not racist. maybe slightly more than 1 for forty in the entire school, but that's what i counted in the yearbook. i've had classes with not a single minority in them. there was one black kid in my advanced bio class out of the nearly forty students, no minorities at all in my german--that's a timy class though, none in my matho of twenty-some . we have other minorities, lots of asians on the west coast , we've got a biggish chinatown, and my school has a lot of middle eastern, but most of them dont mix much because they're in the english as a second language program. i'm mostly curious if there's other cites like this, or ... ? i guess it's just that skin color is the most noticible, looking around at assemblies is kinda creepy, it's a sea of white.
