RAF Wing... Lookee I'm Invisible!!

I think the lyric was written in response to the Vietnam War. Do you consider that war a justum bellum too? Is that why you regard the lyric as propaganda?

"Universal Soldier" was written in the basement of The Purple Onion coffee house in Toronto in the early sixties by native american activist Buffy Sainte Marie. It speaks of about individual responsibility for war and how the old feudal thinking kills us all. A popular singer named Donovan had a hit with it in 1965.

Since Propagander is simply: {Information that is spread for the purpose of promoting a cause} I guess it could be used as almost any written word as propagander.

I look at it as a well written thought provoking poem that provokes strong emotions.

There are many men wiser than me who have expounded on
the "just war theory" From Saint Thomas Aquinas Summa Theologicae to Francisco de Vitoria (1548-1617), Hugo Grotius (1583-1645), Samuel Pufendorf (1632-1704), Christian Wolff (1679-1754),riht up to Michael Walzer's Just and Unjust Wars (1977) {maybe when I have my AH-HA moment smiley - winkeye}

Thanks also for the reading list. I'll pass it on to my professor to include in the syllabus.

I suspect when you grow weary of dropping names you might just have one of those AHHA experiences and maybe confirm my suspicions about your intention in using the word, propaganda, in reference to Saint Marie's lyric. It's ok too. You shouldn't be ashamed to express your opinion. I know I'm not.

She's Cree, by the way, although like many she was adopted and had to find her back. That can get pretty intense I think.

Back to Iraq:

So, some things have been happening. The Iraqis are destroying the missles (which may actually have complied anyway) and the Turks aren't letting the Americans into their country (again). What is George going to do if he can't have his war? He's talking "regime change" but there's no stretch of the imagination that will make any UN resolutions passed so far give him authority to do that. What will he do? Is he going to have to bring all those big guns home without using them?
There's an old expression in pretty much every language: Augustus said Festina lente (make haste slowly). We know it as "haste makes waste," or "less hurry more speed". George could learn from old expressions.

"George could learn from old expressions."

George and learning just don't get along.

Which is a self ego boost actually: if someone with George's intellectual capacity can become the President of the most powerful nation, then anything is possible for me! smiley - winkeye

But you don't need to be bright to be a "leader". What was the name of the general in Catch22....the one who become general on account of his striking image, yet could not string a complete sentance together?

The Premier (Head Man) of our Province never graduated from High School, and he's proud of the fact! And people keep voting for him! And his government keeps dumbing down the education system! I guess that's so the voters will keep getting stupider and stupider until they'll all just not understand what voting is.

I don't think I've been riding you at all, Della, but if you keep lying about it, I just might have to, even though I don't much like trying to ride green-broke fillies.

So why don't you really get on with the discussion, huh? If you've got anything to discuss that is.

You're bl**dy well right, Subcom (as Supertramp might say). Every time I hear a fatuous comparison of Saddam with Hitler, I want to make exactly your points! smiley - oksmiley - peacedove

Not sure whose to blame: the Premier or the voters re-elect him?

In any case, I think you may have stumbled on Georgie's motivation behind his education policies!

Did not realize I was dropping names. I thought you would be interested in reading the thoughts of others who have had varied yet firm thoughts on the matter. I consider my views on the subject much to ambivalent and emotionally charged to be of usefull public contemplation.

Your capacity to express your opinions unabashed and the granting of your 'Laissez Passer' in regards to my thoughts means I shall never have to face the agony of self mortification again. smiley - winkeye

I expressed my opinion on a poem that I have read many time before it's inclusion in this thread. There is no hidden intentions to ferret out sorry to say.

So should I think because of that all canadians are anti education, lacking in common sense and basic intelligence. {I do not} Is not your opinions of Americans garnered in much the same way?

I'm assuming you're joking starbith, or at least being humerous by comparing the Premier of *one* province in Canada to the President of the most powerful country in the world.

Better comparison would be between this Canadian nut and the (nutty) representatives of US states who want to remove Darwinian teachings from the school currculum.

Actually, I thik that that sentiment discribes a problem throughout the western world, It isn't just a national problem. People don't care enough about education. (Please note that never having been to any country except the US and Canada, I can't really prove its a world-wide problem, but I suspect it is.)

It's definatelty not world wide.

I wonder if there are one of those signs in the whitehouse "you don't have to be crazy to work here, but it helps"
