Ear Plugs...
E G Mel Started conversation Jul 14, 2004
Yes you heard me!
I want to know how to say 'ear plugs' in French, everytime I look at the online dictionaries they give me 'prises d'oreille' but somehow I'm not convinced because I haven't found a decent online dictionnary that covers compound nouns as well as my big dictionary. Unfortunately my paper copy is 50 miles away and I have nowhere else to turn, so here I came!
in advance, and I shall now subscribe to this page as I may be able to help with some of the other threads as they come up.

I got "protege-tympans" for the moment... Kind of logical as "tympan" is what's inside the ear and sure needs to be protected when there is a lot of noise... But, on my way to check further, just in case...

Now that's something that rings a bell: "boules quies"
That's _the_ name I definitely remember being used when I was still in France...

Salut a tous,
Boules quies is definitely the term I always heard used for ear plugs.
hmm, that'd be a good idea for a smiley... a little yellow face with ear plugs coming out of both sides. Handy for those 'not listening' moments!

Bonjour Spiff...
Yep.. Definitely a must...
Quies is actually the name of the company [http://www.quies.com/] that makes them... But the name "boules Quies" must have done the equivalent of a "Hoover" and found its way into the French language...

Yep. Or Scotch, also en francais. Meaning something different in English!
Sante!
btw, I'm back in Blighty for the foreseeable future! All moved out of Strasbourg and missing the sound of those nasal vowels,

Doh!!!!!
I clicked on it before but as I was in a hurry I assumed that it was my PC playing up again [ wonderful PC ]... I tried the link at the right hand top corner of the French version page and, well, it's not any better...
You thinks they need some translators?!...
