I worked for the prime contractor (Rockwell Int'l) during the shuttle program in Anaheim California. It was a long way from the cape but I certainly have my memories.

Oh I remember getting my first clearance, working in a factory that had about 20,000 other people, in Anaheim California. The temperature forcing units that used Liquid Nitrogen and how it would steam in the outside air.
We used fiber glass gloves to handle the fittings otherwise we would freeze to them.
I also remember getting off work in the morning and seeing the challenger blow up on take off, after I got home. Of course I cannot begin to tell you any of the technical details, who remembers those after 16 years. I spent four years looking through microscopes at circuits testing them, troubleshooting them and testing them again. In the early eighties I was getting $16/hr pretty good pay for the time frame.
When all of the contracts were completed nearly all of the 20,000 were laid off, with severance pay.
