The shuttle was expressly designed so the USA could look cooler than the USSR. While it managed to successfully utilise technology that was state of the art even for rocket science the whole design premise was flawed.
The very simple proof of this fact is that over 20 years later the preposterously expensive shuttle still doesnt work properly while Big Dumb Boosters have been operating with increasing efficiency and safety over the same period. Hopefully the falling dart will have seen its last mission and all those potential astronauts can breathe a sigh of relief that they can now put their financial muscle behind superior russion technology.
