The people of Earth are very territorial.
They like to divide the planet up into arbitrary pieces.
Then a group of those who call a particular area home, design a flag to wave at their rivals.
This is not as bad as their other hobby of fighting rival groups over the arbitrary borders of territories.
However, they fight about other things too.
They seem to have trouble staying friendly in large groups for long times.
As a result, local space-time is strewn with the flags of forgotten factions.
