Flags of the World: Triangles and Diagonals

Congo

This flag was designed when Congo became independent of France.
For a while after that another one based on the communist flag was used instead.
Now this one has been officially restored to use again.
Tanzania

When Tanganyika and Zanzibar formed a united republic, their flags were combined.
The colours are also supposedly symbolic: green for the land, yellow for mineral wealth, black for the people and blue for the sea.
Trinidad and Tobago

This flag was designed when the islands became independent of Britain.
The red stands for fire - the vitality of the land, people and sun.
The black stands for earth - the people's dedication and unity and the land's wealth.
The white stands for water - the sea around the islands, purity and equality.
That's rather a lot of symbolism in a few diagonal stripes.
Brunei Darussalam

The flag of the Sultan of Brunei was a plain yellow one.
The white and black diagonal stripes were added to denote British protection.
Later some state arms were added in the centre.
Czechoslovakia

Czechoslovakia was mainly formed from 3 states - Bohemia, Slovakia and Moravia.
The white over red basis of the flag is that of Bohemia.
The blue of the triangle is that of Slovakia.
Djibouti

French Somaliland became Djibouti fairly recently on gaining independence from France.
The blue and green stripes represent the people: Issas/Somalis and Afars respectively.
The white triangle symbolises peace and equality while the red star stands for national unity.
Bahamas

This was the competition winning design when the Bahamas became independent from being a British colony.
The blue and yellow bands symbolise sandy islands surrounded by ocean.
The black triangle stands for the unity and vigour of the people.
Sao Tome and Principe

This flag of the former Portuguese colony uses the Pan-African colours.
The 2 black stars represent the 2 islands and their people.
Sudan

A fairly recent revolution caused this flag to replace the former one of independence.
The colours are the Pan-Arab ones but are also symbolic.
Red is for the independence struggle, white for peace, black for the nation and green for both prosperity and Islam.
Equatorial Guinea

The former Spanish colony acquired its flag design fairly recently.
The green, white and red stripes symbolise agriculture, peace and independence respectively.
The blue triangle represents the sea between the mainland and its 5 islands.
Cuba

The design was influenced by the flags of the USA and France in the mid 19th century (when both were regarded as revolutionary).
The 3 blue stripes represent the Cuban provinces of the time.
The 2 white stripes stand for purity of ideals.
The red triangle symbolises the bloodshed and sacrifice of the people and the white star is for independence.
Puerto Rico

This flag was based on the Cuban one.
Philippines

Just when they thought they were being liberated from the Spanish, the Philippine Islands fell to America.
They got to be a republic in the end though - and the flag may have a touch of American influence from that period.
The white triangle is supposed to represent liberation, with blue and red symbolising magnanimity and courage respectively.
The large star has 8 points for the 8 provinces which revolted against Spain and the 3 small stars are for the 3 groups of islands.
