you omitted the most useful way to identify necrotizing fasciitis - an area of redness/discolouration (often purple) which is numb. the other major diagnostic sign is the feeling of crepitus, said to feel like "silk knickers" where you can feel bubbles of gas crunching in tissues

oh dear - i missed out on the discolouration bit? i'm sure that was in the original 
hang on, let me check... yeah, i did mention in the first paragraph about the redness; it's also in the warning signs bit. i didn't know about the crepitus bit though (i'm a microbiologist not a doctor 
) - thanks! maybe i can get the eds to surgically insert that bit...

the important thing is the numbness in the area of discolouration (which is typically purple in fact)-that is virtually pathognomic for necrotizing fasciitis
