The Researcher formally known as Dr St Justin

Does anyone remember Pob? Amongst my friends, I seem to be the only one who remembers it. Pob was a sort of wooden puppet - very cheeky, although I can't actually remember anything of what he did. Except that it was shown on Channel 4 on Sundays, sometime around lunchtime/early afternoon (I think!)

This site might act as an 'aid' for all those ailing memories: http://www.sausagenet.co.uk/

Garius, tell us more.

St Justin, I sort of remember Pob, was it something that S4C (the welsh channel 4) had that made it over to the normal C4?
I must say that at first I thought I read Bod, easy mistake when bod was one of my faves as a child.

Friendly Giant featured a the giant, who was actually a regular sized person in a miniature set, and several puppets (rusty the rooster, gerome the giraffe). The program intro always had the giant arranging miniature chairs around a fireplace for the kids to sit in. One was a rocking chair and one was big enough for two to snuggle in.

Captain Kangaroo was somewhat similar, in that it had a real person (Captain Kangaroo) and several puppets. One puppet, rabbit, was a practical joker and used to invent ways of dropping a load of ping pong balls on Moose (another puppet) or the captain. Sometimes, they showed a cartoon on the show: Tom Terrific and Manfred the Wonder Dog. I had a stuffed dog when I was a kid and I named it Manfred.

Whew! Finally caught up with you guys. Got held up in Covent Garden for a bit... there was a crowd gathered around some guy with a medical team trying to remove a rugby ball from his body.

Ok, so I did stop once...

Now PBS is something I know a little better. Growing up, that's where I saw Monty Python, Dr. Who, and.... the Hitchiker's Guide television series! PBS also had some very good arts coverage. They used to have an extraordinary series called 'Alive from Off-Center' which showcased cutting-edge avant-garde dance and performance art. These days, I don't think they have the funding to do as much, but you can still see some good stuff on 'Great Performances' and 'Sessions at West 54th'

Of course, then again, as I see what's on at this moment... one of the local PBS stations is showing 'Lawrence Welk' while the other one is showing a dry interview with a local college official. smiley - smiley
