Some cheeses contain little or no lactose

My grandmother was not lactose-tolerant, and my father had only limited tolerance. Nevertheless, they were fine with many aged cheeses, which have little or no lactose. My father ate provolone with no complaints.

This is true. I'm lactose-intolerant and eat a lot of smiley - cheese.

The harder the cheese, the better. smiley - smiley

And cheese that's not from cows? Pure heaven. Sheep's-milk feta from Bulgaria is absolute perfection.

A tip for celiacs: most hard cheeses are also gluten-free. Check with manufacturer about coatings, anti-caking agents for grated cheeses, and what kind of mould cultures were used in their blue cheeses.

Thanks, Dmitri. smiley - smiley

There are apparently different levels of lactose intolerance. I think that my father can have a small amount of milk without distress. I used to take him to restaurants, where he would invariably order lobster bisque or clam chowder.

His mother, who was more intolerant, got around the lactose issue by making a lot of custard pies. They were much appreciated by the rest of the family, of course, but primarily they were a food that she could enjoy with the rest of the family.

smiley - drool Yum.

One of my tricks is to drink a glass of whole milk only with a bowl of chili. Apparently, the spices in the chili make it easier to digest the milk. smiley - milk

Yes, anything that dilutes or slows down absorption is good.

Rev Nick - dead man walking (mostly)

As might have been noticed in another thread - barely a meal passes in our home without icy cold smiley - milk. I really dislike "skim" sort, but any other degree right up to warm, frothy and straight from the udder are great by me.

Oh, and in-line with this thread - - - I have not yet met a cheese that I disliked.

I thought lactose bothered you, Dmitri. smiley - huh

Not that low-lactose cheese would have much of it.

I was just trying to find hard cheeses that would be okay for you. I want to help, honestly I do. smiley - grovel

The Nutrition Police seem to be everywhere these days, pouncing on you if you put cream in your coffee (dangerous cholesterol!) or order a steak (those poor suffering animals!) or a large salad (what are you, a vegan nut?). People who only eat whole grain bread might scoff at Italian savory bread, or bread with milk and eggs in it (Indian Naan bread).

It's best not to judge by appearances. After all, the cover is not the book

Yeah - for example, that 'musical' will now be touted as the great thing since sliced bread, and that's just cliche after cliche. smiley - laugh

I am cheese intolerant, not lactose intolerant. The harder the cheese, the worse it gets.

"that 'musical' will now be touted as the great thing since sliced bread" [Dmitri]

But it hasn't been celebrated all that much so far, and likely won't be. I think that Mary and Michael and Topsy could have been better cast. Nevertheless, I like the songs a lot! smiley - cross

Musicals are an endangered species, even though nothing better has come along to replace them. I get a huge lift from Angela Lansbury and the balloon scene. She's 93, and she still sings!

There is nothing cheesy about Mary Poppins, of that I'm sure smiley - biggrin

Did I go off topic for a while? Sorry.

You can't go by me. There's one song in that original film I liked, 'Feed the Birds'. smiley - laugh

Who the heck is 'Topsy'? And why is there a character with that name in a 21st-century musical? smiley - huh

Dmitri, I thought that you didn't like "Mary Poppins Returns." Are you now saying that it was the 1964 original that you didn't like?

I haven't seen 'Mary Poppins Returns', but from that Youtube, I definitely don't want to. I really disliked the 1964 one.

The books, on the other hand, are works of great genius. smiley - smiley Full of occult philosophy.
