As a former member of DeMolay, I found that when I was a member I made friends with other people my age who wouldn't have even spoken to me in school, until they found out I was a member.
I have found that you can utilize your local library if you wanted to learn the general history of Freemasonry. Your best bet is to find one that was authored by past or present members and or Grand Masters of various Freemason organizations.
