A Conversation for How to Choose an Astronomical Telescope

I know some of the BBC's policies may make this difficult, but I'd really be interested to learn which manufacturers make quality 'scopes- having just completed a degree for which astronomy comprised a significant part, I know a lot about the workings of telescopes, but have absolutely no idea where to buy one from or which manufacturers to look for/ avoid!
So what I would be interested to know is:
- Where can I buy a quality telescope in the UK?
- Which manufacturers/dealers should I be looking for, and which ones should I avoid?
- How rigidly is the quality of a 'scope linked to the price I should expect to pay?
- In terms of quality, how much cash should I be willing to spend on each of the 'scope types listed?

I don't know of anyone who has had problems with either tasco or mead.
as for availability, a friend of mine has a list of telescope shops at http://www.zyra.org.uk/tschops.htm which should be a usefull first place to look.
if you find any others, he would appreciate being informed.

If you're thinking of buying one, I'd suggest you try and have a look through a few different types before parting with your cash. If you've just finished an astronomy degree, you may well know a few people who own telescopes and be happy to let you try using them.
I'd definitely recommend going to a specialist shop. There are quite a few around the UK and most advertise in magazines such as Astronomy Now. Have a browse next time you're in a newsagent and see if any are close enough to you for a visit.
