A super comprehensive article, but worth mentioning that for the beginner a decent pair of binoculars will be a better purchase than a small telescope.

10x50 binoculars are much better, until you get up to about a 4inch reflecter.
I wouldn't bother too much with refractors, as they tend to be inconvenient, overpriced and too wobbly for serious work.
however you can get reasonably priced second hand reflectors.
